If either the department or Category of an item is changed, will this affect the historical records such as transaction file? If it does is there an easier solution to solve the problem?

Its typically not recommended that department/categories be changed after there's historical data for this reason. The only "misc" field available in the sales report that may work is the bin location field. What I'd do is test the effect of changing the dept/category but track "original dept/category" in the bin location field (if you're not currently using this field).
- backup your database
- create a new "test" database from your backup
- run a sales report for the item in question (print if you'd like) then edit the item properties by assigning the new dept/category and enter the original dept/category in the bin location field; say the original dept/category is "shoes"
- run the same report but add to your filter "OR" b> I would like to keep the history of sales in its original department until it
Also, for pure historical reporting, just make another copy of the database for use just as offline archive/reporting...
