Handheld Scanners and Inventory

Hi all ~

I'm wondering how to update the database with a handheld scanner, how easy is it? I'm guessing it's through the import option in the inventory workpad. Do I only need the UPC and the quantity totals on a file here?

It looks straight forward, but just wanted the opinion of others that have used this feature.

Anyone recommend a used or inexpensive handheld scanner for inventory purposes?

Thanks Jerry

The easiest thing to do is probably a Physical Inventory - all you need is a CSV file with Item LookupCode, Quantity and optionally the scan date. Pretty much any data capture terminal can easily produce this type of file. You can find souces to rent these devices on line.

There are also Hand Held Add-Ons available for Palm & Win CE devices, but I read your question as asking about the simpler data capture terminals.

  1. But how do you update the database with the CSV file?

Use the Physical Inventory in RMS and import your CSV file you created with your handheld. First create a new Physical Inventory for Manual Entry and then click on the Import button and follow the wizard to import your file. You could also buy the Inventory Count module from New West Tech.

This allows you to create a Physical Inventory count sheet from your handheld device.

  1. Anyone have an inexpensive portable handheld scanner they could recommend for capturing the lookupcode and quantity?

The least expensive way would be to rent a handheld unit. Ask your RMS Partner for help in finding someone who rents these units. We have provided Dell's Axim X50 and the Unitech PA950's, in the past to our clients. But these are NOT inexpensive solutions and we do not keep these in stock or do we rent.
