How Does the Dongle Work?

We are new to RMS would like to understand exactly how the dongle validation process works. As an example, let's use Store Operations. Assume that Store Operations is loaded on the server of a small network. Assume that the dongle is on the first workstation to use RMS each day. Here are some questions about the process:

1). What happens when the first workstation is fired up for the day? The dongle is locally attached. Once it is "seen" by RMS, is dongle/license validation information sent to the server (where the RMS data files reside) or is this validation stored locally on the workstation?

2). What happens when another workstation (without a dongle) logs into RMS? Does it detect the physical presence of the dongle on the first workstation or is there a centrally housed file (on the server, perhaps?) that is checked, rather than the dongle itself? Since the dongle is not on this workstation, how does RMS know that it is okay for this second workstation to open and use Store Operations?

3). Is the dongle only checked from POS workstations (lanes), or is it also checked from back-office workstations running Store Operations Manager?

4). How often does the dongle polling/verification process occur? In other words, once it is running on a workstation, how frequently does RMS recheck the dongle/license data?

5). Finally, what happens when a remote computer connects to the LAN and tries to run Store Operations? Are there licensing problems when accessing RMS this way, since the remote workstation is not physically connected to the network with the dongle computer?

Thanks for your help in understanding this mystical process .

The dongle is checked for when mgr or pos is started. Then fields are updated in the SQL database (you can see these inc. your dongle serial in the config table). Registers other than the one with the key can access the database for the day without the keyed reg. running. If the key has not been read that day RMS switches to eval mode and then de-activates after 30 days.

Manager does not use one of your seats only POS.

If you plan on using multiple databases the machine with the key needs to be connected to it to update these fields. (I run tests on a sample DB but I have to connect the keyed reg. to keep the DB from locking out)
