How to replace Dongle

I have RMS 1.3 R.1 with USB Dongle and wondered what would I've to do if it gets lost or damaged. Can it be replaced? and how and at what cost.

Yes Rene, you can replace and request partner with another dongle, the POS will work till 48 and also send the broken dongle to MS for replacement. After 48 hrs if POS not find the dongle then it goes automatically in evaluation mode. which will allow only five items to be rung up on the POS transaction screen.

Dear Rene, I think there are set of rules for this. what if I lost I think Microsoft Partner will help you in this case as dongle can be used anywhere that's the reason Microsoft now come up in 2.0 with new concept and that's key which you get online or at the time of buying product.

If it gets lost, you will have to file a claim with your insurance company for replacement.

If it gets damaged AND YOU ARE ON A CURRENT SUPPORT PLAN, MS will allow you to do a one time replacement for a low cost (basically shipping & handling, but I don't remember the exact amount). You need to request such a replacement through your partner.

If you are not on a support plan, you would have to buy a replacement at full cost.

This seems like a pretty draconian policy, but since you never see anyone ranting about it, I have to think loss/damage is pretty rare...

If you are concerned, upgrade to 2.0 and send the dongle back. Of course there are trade offs as you will see if you follow back a few months in this group, but all in all I'm happy to bid farewell to the dongle...

Why not just do away with the dongle. Download the information from the dongle, load it into an emulator (several are available), and just run a software emulation of the dongle. Much safer as now you just have a file (about 1KB) that can be copies and safeguarded better than a dongle that could break forever...
