Create an item call giftcard and give it a ILC of GC(what the ILC is doesnt really matter this is just waht we use)

set it as a Voucher for for item type in the drop down, then under Options set it to ask for price when sold, and cannot be placed on PO, Iw ould also set the qty on hand to like 1K or so.

Now hit OK

Now go to your tender types and if you dont have a gift card create one and set its tnder type to Voucher, in the check boxes choose prevent from overtendering, Pop Cashdrawer, and allow multiple entry(the last one will let them use last remaining amounts of multiple cards)

Now go to the file-->configuration and the options tab and then serial numbers and put a check in the allow POS serial number creation(this way you can sell the cards on the fly for what ever amount you want or the customer wants)) and hit OK.

I think I got it all....

Now when you sell a GC item it will come up and ask for a serial number, and then if its not created it will ask if you would like to create it, choose yes, then it will prompt for $$ amount enter the dollar amount and then ring up any addiaiontal items the custoemr ouwld like and this can even include additional giftcards (provided they have different numbers for each) then tender it out and this will activate the card.

Heres a tip, if you want to set your store up so that returns are in the form of a gift card you would simply create a return and then on the same transaction sell a gift card equal to the value of the return, no loss revenue to the store(Keep in mind to check local laws, some areas dont allow this)

Are you using different numbers on each gift cert? If so than yes, if not then no.

You can still sell gift cert as an item without serializing them but when a customer comes into your store and uses say a $25 gift cert on a $5 item what do you do with the other $20?

The advaantage of doing the serialized gift cert or card is the entire $25 stays in your store.
