locking up

I am running the very latest version of RMS on 4 lanes. I keep getting frequent lock ups on the registers during "ringing up" I have to cntl alt del and shut down RMS and restart RMS. It then runs fine for a few days and locks up again. Never had these issues with older versions of RMS/Quicksell Anyone have any ideas why this happens???

Arve,

What version of Windows? Win9x, for example, has a problem running for more than 48 hours straight.

Is it happening on all machines?

When you say "ringing up", this when you press the F12 key, before or after?

Have you tried restarting the machine every day? If you leave your machines running all the time, you can schedule a restart in the middle of the night.

Have you scanned for viruses, worms, spyware?

Running the latest Windows update.

Ran a chkdsk on the hard drive? Its a program to check the status of the hard drive.

thanks for all that info Jeff,.. I run xp sp2 on all machines, they dont get rebooted every day, actually , not very often unless it's acting up... "ringing up" I meant while they are scanning in items, before F12 "checkout" I just installed RMS 1.3 this morning on all registers, so I will see how that works.. I have fairly fresh WIN XP installs (new HP computers) so I havent really checked the systems for "crap", but I will do that....We have not untill recently been connected to the internet on any of them either so , I dont think I have too much spyware/virus... But we installed TPI's software for CC checkout also recently, so these days we are connected to the internet so I better check that too....

Do you get any error messages, or do the registers just stop responding? When RMS starts acting flaky, the first place I usually look is at the OPOS hardware - if this happens after scanning an item, the possible devices whould be the scanner or the Pole Display.

I would not expect TPI's software to cause any issues on an item add as it's really only activated after the Tender Window closes, but you're right to suspect the most recent change made to the system...

thanks Glenn,... it happens during scanning in the items, but we dont have any OPOS scanners or poledisplay,... the only OPAS we run is the epson tmt-88 printer and cashdrawer. one register only have the printer OPOS.

It probably won't help, but try reindexing the database - SO Administrator, Databse/Reindex. Take a Backup first.

This doesn't really seem like an indexing problem, but reindexing hascleared up some really oddball issues in the past. This kind of problem points to hardware to me, but I'm not sure what it could be in the setup you've described - check all of the cables to make sure they are connected securely, but that's about all I can think of...

Thanks Glenn,,... x-mas rush is over, back to troubleshooting,... still having the freezing up problems,,... btw. which OPOS software version do you recommend, most stable???

I don't keep a list of stable OPOS versions - On Epson's site

there is a chart of OPOS version to printer Firmware, but as far as I know, the TM-T88 firmware hasn't changed for a while. I generally install the latest version/service pack then back it down to an earlier version if I have trouble. I haven't had a problem with Epson OPOS drivers since something like 2.1 - they seem to be very well behaved as OPOS drivers go.

Hi, Arve. You should look at your networking for errors. Are you using a server or a windows xp machine for your server? Are you using dhcp or set ip addresses? if it's dhcp, what is controlling the ip addressing? You should use a windows server, and I do recommend hard ip's with the dns properly set up. If you don't have a server DEFINITELY use hard ip's. if you don't have a dhcp server, or you are using a router or firewall to control dhcp, you are asking for trouble! Betcha you have a comm issue and not a rms or sql issue.

I have been looking for a solution to this for some time. It only happens on Windows XP machines. To fix it turn off "System Restore"

Craig,

Under the "Initial Size" insert 1.5x that of the physical memory or RAM ie.

512 MB(physical memory) = 768(Virtual Memory) and > Glenn, what would be the optimized settings for virtual memory?

I found a very odd solution to this exact problem i was experiencing with the POS locking up while tendering a sale. It was as simple as changing the windows login information. For Example:

during windows bootup, We were using the User: Fish Tech Outfitters we changed the user account and made the login more simple. User: FishTech

no spaces, and shorter. For some odd reason, (or possibly just a miracle) our POS does not lock up while tendering sales anymore. My guess is... even though RMS should be using SQL authentication for access to the database, it was trying to use windows authentication using the user name with spaces, causing it to lock up while trying to connect to the database.

anyways, yet another possible solution to this problem.

Andy,

I really doubt changing your username had _anything_ to do with your SQL login.

What probably happened is that you had a screwed up user profile and you created a new one when you created a user name.
