looking at buying RMS but not sure if i can import my exisiting da

I'm currently looking at buying RMS for my indoor rock climbing centre. looking at other posts I can see that i can purchase Add-ons to do anything i need that's not in the box, but...

Can I import all my previous data from my legacy system. I don't mean just my customers names and addresses, but all my sales history from the retail shop, all my customer purchases history etc. My current database/system is in Access 2.0, but i can export all 175mB to excel and wash it and work out what fields are which and re-map the whole thing - most time consuming, but do-able.

I'm just not sure if RMS will allow me to import all those transactions? Do they need to me manually recreated as POS transactions?

We use the transaction history for Insurance Purposes and it would be ideal to have it in one system, rather than having a legacy system running on a Win95 machine in the corner - just in case!

Cheers,

The full transaction history can probably be imported. Your current system may include some fields that either are not supported in RMS or don't map easily, but you should be able to get the majority of the information. Retail Realm has an import tool that is supposed to be able to import transaction history, but even with the tool, I would recommend having a partner help you with this (and consult on whether it's really a good idea for you).

CliffHanger,

It is possible to import Transaction History. You will probably have to massage your data and get it ready but that does not gaurantee that your old system will have the data what RMS needs. It won't be easy to import any type of history from one system to another. Retail Realm has an import utility that should help you get your data in the correct tables.

Thanks Rob and Glenn. We will be dealing with a partner to purchase the software, but they basically said NO upfront so i thought i'd get a second opinion and now go back to them!

Thanks aga> CliffHanger,

Cliffhanger,

_Almost_ anything is possible. The question is "How much is it worth to you?" Conversions can be relatively simple and inexpensive or complex and _very_ costly.

Having that old machine running the old program is a very inexpensive way of storing and finding the information and you know its correct. You may find weeks, months or years from now, that some or all of the old info was incorrectly imported.

Can you not install the program with its data on a new machine?

Hi Jeff,

The legacy program/application written in 1993 runs on Access 2.0. As i can see there are a couple of problems, RMS needs XP store machines and you can't run Access 2.0 on XP, I don't have Access 2.0 reinstall disks, the application/program won't run on newer versions of Access so i can't upgrade it, the program writer vansihed years ago and i don't have any install disks etc! So basically it all runs on Win 95 machines at present, and would need to live in a corner on a Win 95 machine if we migrated to RMS or even upgrade to newer version of access and don't use the App for comparison purposes.

We need all the attendance historys etc for insurance purposes - we are an indoor rock climbing centre in the second most litigious nation on earth!

If we could import it to a reasonable level of accuracy, we can always compare to the old system if a query arises from our insurer. At least the RMS will run a lot quicker and be a lot more stable than the current system which is around 170mb of data running on Access!
