Looking to buy a new system

May 13, 2005 5 Replies

The sales people just left my store, and I liked what I saw. I am also looking in to other POS software and they all seam to do the same thing. The other software I am looking in to also use the same data base type as Microsoft RMS.

What I want to know is why did you choose Microsoft RMS over the others you all looked at.

Thank you for your help.

John, In my experience I chose the software because it's put out by Microsoft...that was one of the main reasons, and I felt that they would probably do the best with it. The future or RMS still remains to be seen, but for the experience I have had with the software, it's been nothing but good. It does exactly what I need, and is very easy to use as well as easy to teach my employees. (I am in liquor retail) I went from standard registers, to a computer POS terminal. My employees basically don't have to think at all...I do all of the pricing, and they scan and read off the prices. It's great for me actually.

John,

We use this software in a University ComputerStore.. Now, it seemed like a logical choice for us, being a dell center and all.. However, I have had some issues with it, although being extremely customizable, very difficult to customize! You have to be a programmer, or have a good understanding of XML/XSL just to change your receipts. Now, I will say that it does do what I need, and the company that sold us this product will make it do whatever I want it to, (for a price of course), but I would just like it if I could do most of the customization myself.

All in all, the program does exactly what it is suppossed to, and it is going to be a less expensive way of getting a centralized POS system rather than going with a completely customized product from a software house.

We bought RMS because it was developed once Quick Sell was bought by Microsoft. It does what we need and has many factors we don't use. I like being able to set security option on a cashier basis and it was easy to train my staff. I trained all of my staff fully within a month. Granted most of the staff as new and had a lot of additional stuff to learn but they got. I'm not saying they don't forget what the know.

On a downside, updates have been minimal but this forum is rich with knowledge.

i think most of the people who use the software like it in general...and all of its features. you just have to realize that owning it means that you will have to pay an ADDITIONAL 20% of the software purchase cost ANNUALLY for almost NOTHING. there has been 1 upgrade that was very useful to us and would warrant an extra cost for the upgrade (namely the integrade EDC credit card stuff)--however you do have to factor in an extra 20% of the cost annually for a few hotfixes that most likely you'll never need...and don't beleive the hype with their 'critical business support'...I don't think anyone has ever taken advantage of this. I remember posting on this newsgroup to anyone who had ever recieved any 'free' or 'critical' support from MS and not one person replied--on the other hand the support you do pay for is good.

john, i think it's good software. i just think they kind of scam you with the annual fees--i think it's ok to charge annual fees for this type of software...20% even, but only if the development of it warrants it.
