Named pipes and TCP/IP

Question: We are running RMS Dynamics 2.0 with all updates and SQL 2005 Express. Is it still necessay to enable namedpipes and TCP/IP under the Client network utility as it is now set in SQL 2005 configuration manager? We are experiencing some database connections issues on startup and occasionaly when the internet connection closes. Thanks in advance

I just got an answer to this from Microsoft:

The answer is yes, all computers running RMS. Alias configuration need only apply to the machines that are NOT running the SQL database locally.

I also have some additional info for you direct from the source:

  1. Do we need to make changes to the client network utility? Answer: Yes, the client network utility must be set properly for all computers including the server.

  1. If so, are the changes different depending on whether you're configuring on the machine with the database installed locally? Answer: No, the settings are to be the same for all computers for consistency.

  2. Should the configuration changes that we made in SQL Server Configuration Manager be different depending on whether you're configuring on the machine with the database installed locally? Answer: For consistency we want all settings on all computers to be exactly the same.

  1. Are the changes that we made in SQL Server Configuration Manager conflicting with the settings that I have in my Client Network Utility? Answer: In both SQL Server Configuration Manager and Client Network Utility, the primary protocol should be Named Pipes.

  2. Also, the procedure for configuring the alias is a little bit unclear; if you have a better step-by-step I'd appreciate it. Note: This setting needs only to be done in all the registers or back office computers and not on the server. Answer: a) In the Alias tab click Add. b) Type the server's computer name in the Server Alias text box. c) Leave Named Pipes marked. d) Hit OK.

  1. In the Client Network Utility, should I be un-checking the "enable shared memory protocol" in the general tab? Answer: Leave this option marked.

I hope that this helps ALL of us...

Thanks,

Brandon
