Can't get cash drawer to pop

I had a hard drive failure Saturday night after we closed (came in Sunday and the computer was loading like it was going through quicksand). I setup a computer we use as a DVR for our security cameras(already had SQL running and RMS installed just for this purpose) to take care of sales until I finish building and configuring a new Windows 7 Professional system to take over(huge pain in the butt BTW). Luckily I have batch files setup to backup everyday so I lost no data ( my brother-in-law has a computer repair store and was able to pull my backup from the hard drive). We're not sure if it was the hard drive, motherboard, or processor since I told them to quit wasting time trying to figure it out and build me a new one. The system was

3-4 years old and I wanted to upgrade to a net display and a new Star USB printer anyway so I figured now was the ideal time to take the leap. I installed 7 instead of XP because I want to keep moving forward as much as I can, and XP will be nearing the end of it's support cycle and most hardware and programs are being built with 7 in mind. I wish I had stuck with XP just because it's a headache to get everything configured with 7, but I am sure I'll be glad down the road that I went with 7, it's just hard to feel that way right now.

Everything went pretty well getting the backup up and running, but I have hit a few snags along the way since the peripherals were never set up on the backup system. It's an XP pro system so all the drivers, etc. are the same as the old system that fried, which has helped a lot. Just a quick note here to everyone, if it is at all possible for you have a backup system with RMS installed ready to go in the case of emergency do it, you'll be glad you did. I am usually not the prepared type, but having this backup system ready to go made a huge difference as to whether I was going to pull all my hair out or not. I can take my time getting my new system setup and running smoothly without the pressure of not having a system running the store. This happened on a Sunday so no one was open to get any hardware and keep my store running. Sorry about the long post, I just thought maybe it would help to get a few more people prepared in the case of hardware failure to their store's life blood.

Anyways..... the main problem I'm having with my backup system is getting the cash drawer to pop. The printer prints and works fine. The printer is an Epson TM T88IIP. I have OPOS installed and the check health for the cash drawer pops the drawer within the configuration utility. It just won't do it in the POS. I have the cash drawer enabled and the LDN for the cash drawer is set the same in RMS Manager as in the utility. I have checked everything many times and it is all setup properly. I don't know how long it's going to be until I get my new system on line, and the cash drawer not popping is a royal PITA.

Any help here would be much appreciated. This really has me baffled.

Hi Convoluted,

Thanks for the quick response. response was set at 100 by default. Would it help to change it to 75 or 110 or something like that? I didn't know whether I should mess with that or not. It's baffling since it worked with the other system which was pretty close to the same configuration. The main difference is the backup is XP Pro and the system that failed was XP Home. Check health works fine, but won't pop in POS. :-(

After trying to change the setting, it is set at 100ms and won't let me change it at all. Although like I said it does work with check health, just not in the POS itself.

Just an idea, but, did do you look at the register properties in manager under register list? Database/Registers/Register List Look at the Cash Drawer tabs and ensure it's enabled and has the right OPOS name. This may be a reason it works in OPOS but not POS.

Just a thought, h> After trying to change the setting, it is set at 100ms and won't let me

Power off your printer few minute and same time close the rms then power on printer first. It should work. Some time it happen if you open your drawer manuely .

I started using the Star TSP654U a while ago and never have an issue unless someone moves the cable. The drivers for windows 7 are available when needed.

Paul,

Unless someone moves the cable? That seems like a royal PITA.

Have you tried the standard "Clear the printer memory" trick?

Turn off the printer, hold down the feed button, and turn the printer back on. It should print out a configuration receipt that details the internal settings of the printer. Then press the feed button one more time and you should get a long printout of all possible symbols the printer can make.

It should work after you do this.

Otherwise it is software sett> Paul,

Michael,

I wish that had worked, but alas it didn't. I should receive my new Star printer, cash drawer and new monitor for net display today, so hopefully I will have my new system up and running by mid week. I can't complain too much about having to replace some of this stuff. The printer is 6-7 years old and the cash drawer is the original drawer I bought 14 years ago when I first got modernized with an MS-DOS menu driven system by Real World Point of Sale Plus. The computer isn't quite as old, maybe 3-4 years, but it was just a cheap off the shelf HP from Circuit City anyway. I've always heard the average life expectancy for a hard drive is 4-5 years. Sadly the life expectancy of the technology itself is probably half that. I'll update as I can for any interested parties that want too see how Windows 7 will play with RMS 1.3.1006. Yes, that's right, I haven't upgraded to 2.0 yet. I hated the licensing changes, but the biggest issue was I couldn't get 2005 Express to work on my XP Home System that I am replacing. I already have 2005 Express installed and working with 1.3 at home, so I may take the leap and just upgrade everything at once while I have the chance to do it in a non-production environment. I haven't decided yet, but it wouldn't make sense for me to keep up with my maintenance plan if I don't take the leap and keep up with the new versions they come out with.

Craig,

A little OT, but as you have probably seen posted here, apparently there are going to be credit card compliance issues with 1.3, so you may want to try to get upgraded to 2.0. Make sure you download all the updates before you ditch the maintenance agreement ;). I ditched mine after 2.0 and have never looked back. This group provides better support and apparently if you are staying with RMS, as we are, there is not much point in paying for maintenance unless you need tech support.
