Dunno, to me New means new and Copy is a clone of something existing. We always recommend Copy for similar items.

I didn't vote. I would tend to disagree, as in my business I routinely create multiple new items from one supplier that are not in the same dept/ctgy.
Like Jeff, I use 'copy' a lot instead of new. If you use copy, be certain to zero the inventory fields.
The joke, however, is QuickBooks itself and not the RMS interface. My company uses QB Pro but I am hoping to switch to Great Plains or Small Biz Financials at some point. We deal with an accountant that has Notquickbooksaphobia, and my bookkeeper follows the accountants lead like sheep to the slaughter, so I expect some resistance to the change...
