My reseller actually told me that the QS Import Utility wasn't reliable enough and that I should only use it on my initial setup. Also, it did some weird things to my department and categories. Do you use it?

We get most of our clients to use it with out any problems. The reason it did weird things to your Dept and Cat is because it is case sensitive and has to be the exact spelling of the Dept or Cat name as in your database, otherwise it will import the Dept name, not the Cat name and give you an error on the item. As with any mass changes to the database you want to make a backup of the database just in case you make a mistake. You can then go back and correct your mistakes. You'll need to be diligent when creating your import files and if you use the same format (i.e. the columns of your import files are always the in the same order) you can save a template of the of your import settings to speed up importing.

We have a couple of clients that are using the QS Import tool on a continual basis as you are without any problems, we make them follow some simple guidelines for creating and importing their files that can not be broken.

EMS SQL Import - cost $39US - This tool can also import from Access, Excel, TXT, DBF and XML DTS comes with a full blown SQL Server in the Enterprise Manager Both of these tools require a strong knowledge of the Database Schema and relational database management on a whole.

It is funny how they told you that it isn't reliable but to use it to do your initial setup. I guess initially you don't need your system to be setup correctly? Like I said above you need to be diligent with creating your import files and make a backup of your database before any mass changes and you should be fine. Lastly, I would not do imports during busy times of the day, try and do them in the morning or at night.

Unfortunately you can not use the Sales Tax when importing. You need to assign Item Sales Tax after import using the Inventory Wizards.

** If you have a default Sales Tax that you use for all items follow the instructions below to correct error. You can also use the instructions on how to assign the Sales Tax after importing items.

Delete your newly created Items Tax and possibly Sales Tax. Go to the Wizards menu --> Inventory Wizards, choose Assign Item Sales Tax click next, select all your departements click next and Finish. From the drop down box on the far left column make certain that the correct sales tax is choosen. Right click and choose copy and right click again and choose Paste to all rows. Commit the changes and you should be golden.

I have not tried it in a long while but if you run a Select * From Item Query in Administrator and get the exact code for tax you can import it using the Wizard. Backup prior to trying this, as always. Like I say, it has been a while......test it first. MT
