A couple things may be happening...

1) Your MSR is not sending the right data format. Have your reseller check this out. If you don't have a reseller, you can find one at There are some Knowledge base articles on configuring card readers, but this can be model dependent which is why I would point you to a reseller. 2) Some cards will send bad data even if the MSR is configured correctly. I have seen some AMEX cards scan with spaces in the card number - this will give you an invalid card number message. I have had reports of Visa/MC giving this message as well, but it's card specific and seems to happen less than 1 in 100 cases. Try some other cards and see if they work.
