Scanning (Serialized) Inventory

Dec 01, 2005 4 Replies

I need to buy a handheld scanner for taking physical inventory and need recommendations about which scanner to buy.

I also want to start using serialized inventory. Primarily for appliances and electronics.

Is it possible to receive inventory with a handheld scanner of some type that scans both model and serial numbers? The product almost always has both model and serial number bar codes. It'd be easy enough to have a warehouse guy scan the model & serial of every box as it comes off the truck--easier than handwriting in any case.

I'm hoping to use the same device for both functions.

Thanks, Tom

There are several Add-ins out there for doing receiving on a handheld device - usually Windows PocketPC based.

Most add-ins are sold through the same reseller community as RMS, so check with your vendor. I'm not sure if any of them support serial number scanning at receipt, but would expect that they do.

I found an add-in called 2B-Inventory from a company called 2B Solutions. It looks good. I intend to buy a Symbol MC50 and try it out. I'll post a review after a while.
