SQL Server 2005 Express edition "hangs"

May 30, 2007 4 Replies

Although this might not be a RMS related issue maybe you have some hints.. In one of our shops the SQL Server (installed locally on the cash register) seems to hang from time to time. That means suddenly it cannot be accessed anymore. Not by the POS, not by StoreOPManager - not even by the administrator. We have to reboot the Register in order to make it work again. The Service is still running and the Eventlog doesn't show any problems. Also the Taskmanager shows 90% idle.

Any Ideas?

Hi Christian,

What is the registrer doing when it hangs ?

Is it running with Version 2.0 of RMS ?

do you have just the one register ?

is the database installed locally ?

You seem to be quite knowledgeable so you might want to see if the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express at

be of some help in isolating the apparent hang by the service. This gives you a more direct and 'unencumbered' access to thedatabase.

You don't indicate whether you tried to stop and restart the SQL service but that might provide some clue as to the source of the 'feature.'

Hi Michael,

the POS is running StoreOp 1.3.1006. Database is installed locally. It's just this register and only the applications that access the database (StoreOpManager, POS) hang. You can work with Explorer just fine. As I said no Process shows excess CPU or memory usage during the hangs.
