Accountant

There are several sellers on EBAY offering 2008 Premier Accountant for around 329 shipped or 309 + shipping.

They are claiming this version installs the full contractor version if selected. That is a substantial savings. Can anybody confirm their claims are true?

The premier accountant version can "toggle" to any other version in that year. Go for it.

Btw, all of the programs are basically the same. The industry specific addons are usually just extra reports. Not always worth the extra money.

As I mentioned in a previous post I'm already running a contractor edition version (2004). I want to run 4 copies eventually. 2 in house, one at home (vpn) and one mobile (vpn). At four copies it looks cheaper to upgrade instead of try and find additional licenses for my 2004 version.

If you will have 4 simutlaneous users then you will need 4 copies for sure. You may find that depending on how the users access the program you might be able to get away with fewer copies.

Yeah, I did that in my old office. Three installs one database one user on at a time.

How are you planing on setting up your VPN? How many users will be accessing the data at the same time? Perhaps you do not need four copies of the software.

I plan to setup some direct closed paths to a shared internal "server" drive. Pretty simple stuff except for setting up the allowed IP groups that can get through the router and setting up the VPN layering. Probably no more than two users actually working with it, but I am horrible at actually remembering to close everything when I leave. Especially when a client calls with a problem and I have to run.

I definitely considered just installing the software on multiple machines and staying with one license. I did that at the old office, and it worked ok, but it was only a few steps to my desk to logoff if I needed to access things from the front desk & vice versa.

Are you planing on having QB installed on both your home computer and a portable and wish to conect to a data file on a server in your office?

In the past, QuickBooks over a VPN was very sluggish, though haven't tried it with the new database engine. The preferred method was using terminal services on the server, which also may help in the licensing area.

VPN tends to be very sluggish in general from my experiences. Other options are LogMeIn, GoToMyPC and Intuit's WebEx.

The only version "supported" by Intuit for running QB using Terminal Services is the Enterprise version. The use of the term VPN can also inclue terminal services as well as any of the other remote control services live Logmein
