Buy a copy of QB2009. It can read 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 files. It will convert the earlier files so you cannot make changes and return to client, but you will be able to read and work with them.
OfficeMax and others have had it on sale recently for $100.
Don't "upgrade"...install qb2009 to a separate folder on your hard drive. Just watch the prompts carefully during the installation process. This will give you both 2005 and 2009 to work with. When you are done with 2005 then you can just uninstall it.
Make a couple of backup copies of your 2005 file for safe keeping. Make sure you run the full verification process when you make the backup files. If you get an error message while trying to do the verification, post back and we'll work on that problem.
Assuming no errors are detected when you created the backup file then use the Restore Company option in QB2009 to restore the QB2005 back up file. It will convert your file to the QB2009 format automatically. There have been several changes since the 2005 program so go through the tutorials found under Help>>Learning Center.
$99 at Office Depot on sale. How easy is the upgrade? I worry it might wipe out my QB 2005.
I am trying the demo. The person who gave me the file said I needed to use the password recovery file because they did not have the password. It is not a hacked or stolen file. I was trying the demo version first but will probably get the new version and follow your advice to set up another folder.
The password recovery is asking for a license number. I used the one from the demo. It asked for my zip code and email address. I think my home zip is on file for my 2005 file. QB said it was wrong and failed. I will cal them tomorrow.
I do not know the Admin User Name or the Password.
The person who provided this left the company and is difficult. They said they did not have the log in and password. They enjoy wasting my time and are not local.
Can I recover this log in and password?
Thanks for your help and sorry to be a pest.
What is the password recovery file. Is this some sort of third party program or perhaps from Intuit that can hack into password protected QB files?
