How to Make a File Disappear From Open Database List?

I created a copy of our QB 2007 file in order to do an experiment in a harmless environment. Now everytime I open QB the experimental filename is sitting there at the top of the Database Open list ("No Company Open"). What is the safest way to remove this experimental file form the open list?

Change the number of previous company that are displayed. Go to File>>Open previous company>>Set number of Previous companies. Change this to 1 and open another company file so that this new file shows up on the list instead.

W,

If you do not have enough company files to make Laura's suggestion work and you are feeling brave enough, you can delete previous companies from you registry. QB 2009's list is found in:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Intuit\QuickBooks\19.0\accountant

The "19.0" may vary, depending on your version of QB.

Better yet (and safer), search your hard drive for qbwuser.ini and edit the bottom of the file. This file is version specific and can be found under your windows user id in the application data\Intuit\QuickBooks 200x folder.

Cool! Found mine in (Windows Server 2008):

C:\Users\todd\AppData\Local\Intuit\QuickBooks 2009

Laura, do you know where the last user name to open a company file is stored? I have search the registry with no joy.

Many thanks,

Found it:

Under Windows Server 2008, the Quick Books last user name is found in:

C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 2009\qbw.ini

Good hunting.....That is the same location on my Vista machine.

On my XP machine that file is located in C:\Documents and settings\All Users\Application data\Intuit\QuickBooks 200x.

I don't know of any way to modify that file automatically with QB. Perhaps a script file could be written to automatically change it back to Admin after each use. A bat file that copies a saved copy of the file into that location comes to mind. It could copy that file prior to launching QB for the current user. {just thinking off the top of my head...its been too many years since I did that kind of programing}.

Thank you. Occasionally, I win one. But the glory is seldom long lived.

I set the turkey (qbw.ini) to "Read Only". Seems to have done the trick.

Another good trick.

How would that be possible? It only takes one.

If that is the only file he/she has. If that is the case then I would just open a sample file that comes with the installation. A lot of people are not aware of these files.
