I have a client that needs to keep track of two quantity values for each line item on a bill. They buy and sell fuel and because of the rules of fuel distribution, they pay the tax on the fuel that they purchase when they buy the fuel. Some vendors sell the fuel in gross gallons and some vendors sell it in net gallons. In the colder months, the vendors that sell and bill net gallons cause my client to pay additional tax that he can recover if he files for a refund with the state where he purchased the fuel. For example, if he buys 9000 net gallons from the vendor, when he delivers it to his cutomer, it may be only 8900 gross gallons becuase of the cold temperature. My client always bills his customers in gross gallons. Since he was charged tax on 9000 gallons, but only billed his customer for 8900 gallons, he can file for a refund from the state for the tax on 100 gallons. Therefore, he needs to be able to maintain the gross and net values on a bill so that he can perform this calculation. Is there any way to have two quantities associated with the bill, one for calculating the amount of the bill based on the unit price and one for performing the refund calculation? If so, I cannot seem to find a way to do this. By the way, he is still using QuickBooks Pro 2004 and probably will not be upgrading to 2006 for a while.
