please help

I have a client using quickbooks, the database file is about 70 meg. They are running a peer-to-peer setup with just 2 pc's. They have 2 licenses and are running in multi-user mode. QB2003 with all updates. XP pro on both machines. Which ever pc is accessing the datafile remotely experiences long delay if they try to look at a client register, and there are a couple of other actions that cause long (15 to 20 second) delay.

This is not a network issue, not a protocol issue. If I move the data files from one to the other the speed issue is just about the same, even though the computers are not all that similar. Is there a setting/some settings in quickbooks that will help solve this issue, or is there db just too big?

thanks for any help.

I have had similar probs, with a database of 120meg, 5 computers linked, I have found that defragging and cleaning up the unneccesary files on the host machine helped a bit

Getting faster workstations and/or running off a dedicated server as well as reducing the size of the database will all help.

You're right - it's not the network. There are two things that primarily influence the speed: The program itself and the speed of the local machine. Since you can't do anything about the program, you'll have to get faster computers.

For example:

1.5 GHz, 40Gb drive, 52x CD-ROM, etc $199.98

Check under your seat cushions for the necessary funds. If you wait a couple of months, this same computer will be a premium in your next box of Cracker Jacks.

The computers are relatively new and do most things very well. file xsfer speed between machines is good. It is just a few qb's operations that seem to take an extra long time to complete on whatever machine is connected over the lan. We have put the data on a "dedicated" machine only to find that both pc's now experience the slow response. Specifically when you highlight at customer and click on the "register" key. I am sure I'm not the only one seeing this problem, someone out there can help. Please!!!!! or do we have to move to a more robust platform to get decent perfomance on the network???

thanks again.

There are two things I would try to see if you can speed up the processing.

Firstly, make sure that you regularly rebuild the QB file. With a file this size, I would recommend at least once a week in your situation.

Secondly, if your version will support terminal services, you may find that you can speed up processing when using the remote machine. You may notice some slowing on the host machine when both machines are being used, but you can then ascertain whether there is a net improvement.

Otherwise, it is an issue faced by all QB users on networks when files get "too" big. The most drastic solution is to choose an appropriate time to create a new file - that will work until the file grows again.
