QB company files on external Hard Drive

I have a client that receives the following error when opening a company file stored on a External Hard drive.

Runtime Error! Program: C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2006\qbw32.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

The file opens normally if it is copied to the local "C" drive. Anyone ever have this problem?

Clarify external hard drive for me. Is it a USB drive connected to this computer? Or is it a Network Storage Device? Or is it a network drive?

Thanks

Gary

You have the path pointing to the file on the C dive and the file is on another drive. You need to change the path.

I don't think so, Ron. The software **IS** on the local drive, so that's where the path

**MUST** point.

I recently had it setup this way on a Network Storage Drive. You need to make sure that you have a Drive letter mapped to the directory on your external hard drive. Do this and you should get rid of the error. (I was getting that same error also before mapping)

I don't think you can map just a "drive."

What you think is a "drive" is really the drive plus its root directory. In other words, you are "mapping" to a specific folder on a particular drive.

I haven't had problems with other versions opening a file residing on an external hard drive (USB stick, portable hard drive, etc).

Is the client choosing to open a company file then browsing to I:, locating the file and selecting it?

You may want to map (via Map Network Drive accessible by right-clicking My Computer) the folder itself to see if that eliminates the problem.... ie I:\Intuit\Quickbooks Pro

Please be advised that the problem came back again. What I did was: (1) Installed a copy of XP onto the external drive (2) Installed a copy of QB
