Company file on hard drive will not open

Aug 13, 2005 3 Replies

Previously saved company data files, stored on my hard drive, will not open. When I navigate to them in QB, and try to open the file, QB does not open the company file.

However if I copy the file to my SD card, where I'm storing monthly copies of company files, QB WILL open the file.

Why will QB not open the file from the folder in which I am storing it?

Check the folder permissions on the hard drive.

What error messages do you get?

Re: Folder Permissions I'm running XP Home. I'm the only user on the computer. I'm not on a network. Thus, am I correct in concluding that folder permissions is NOT an issue? At any rate, I've never done anything (knowingly) that had to do with folder permissions, nor do I understand how to do so.

Re: Error message I receive. None. After navigating to the file and clicking on it to open it, I am simply returned to the QB screen from which I started the attempt to open the file.

Are they saved as 'read only'? A common error is to burn a backup to cdrom, where it is saved as 'read only' for obviuos reasons. When you copy the backup back to hard drive, you have to change the file properties back to read/write.
