One of the biggest changes for Vista regards user rights. Microsoft will be pushing for most users to run under Standard User rights, and only use Administrator rights for necessary system changes. Since many legacy applications such as QB demand Power user or Admin rights in order to run, due to these applications writing to files and the registry in what should be protected locations, MS is introducing file and registry virtualization. This kludge should allow legacy applications to run under Standard rights. But there are some "issues" that system admins should be aware of. More info can be found here:

Hopefully, Intuit will catch up to the current and more secure way of handling user rights and its own file and registry handling in upcoming versions of QB.

There also seems to be a problem installing and running QB2006 Pro. An install can be forced, but won't run. I was hoping someone knew if Intuit was addressing this.

I doubt Intuit will do anything about it. As with most software companies, their software is written to work with current versions of Windows. So QB 2006 works with XP and earlier. It's more of a Microsoft issue. There is still a LOT of tuning going on with the Vista betas, and legacy application compatibility is one of the main areas still being worked on. So there is at least a chance QB 2006 and earlier will work with the production release of Vista. And, if not, there will likely be some manual permissions changes that will enable it to run.

I would be very surprised if Intuit isn't already gearing QB 2007 for Vista.

You might try posting your question on the QuickBooks forums. Maybe you will get a less guess-based answer there.

Hi Klunk. Sorry, I somehow missed this response. I did search the QB forums and didn't really come up with anything definitive. At any rate, time will tell, and if I have to buy another version to maintain Vista compatibility, so be it. But you may well be right in that compatibility may be achieved one way or another.

Thanks for your response, Alex
