Slow or non-existant access to file on another computer

I'm not sure that this is a QuickBooks problem or some weird network problem. I have a QuickBooks file on my desktop machine (Windows XP). We have several computers that access this file, a desktop and a laptop. I have a second laptop that I want to use to access the file. For whatever reason, it takes a ridiculous amount of time to open the file (the application which is installed locally on the laptop is okay). When I say ridiculous, I mean 15 minutes! (As often as not it is so slow, I get an error).

The other laptop that opens this file has no such problems. Another desktop that is on the same wireless network as this laptop has no problem. It appears to be a problem with this machine.

Has anyone had any such similiar problems with multiple computers accessing the same QB file?

Sounds like a network problem. What kind of wireless card does the slow laptop have? Maybe it is 802.11b, which is quite a bit slower than the current 802.11g standard.

Try copying a big file across the network on a few machines and time it.

Also, what is the speed of the laptop's cpu and how much ram does it have?

It's really subtle. This is an IBM Thinkpad. It's new, so I believe that it uses the most recent technology. We have tried another wireless card which uses the g standard. That didn't work. I can easily run this if the file is on the local drive or a flash drive. There just seems to be a shared drive on another machine that is the problem. I've been playing with the TCP/IP NodeType which some of my research seemed to think was the problem, but so far, no go.

What version of QB and which revision? There is a known bug in 2006 R5? that can cause a huge delay in opening a second user over a network.

Sounds like an issue with the network card on the slow computer.

Maybe you need a faster network card?

When you put a program like QB on a network you want the file living on the fastest computer.

It is slow to open even when I'm the only one accessing the file. We tested with the internal network card and a new external network card. Same results. The version of QB is 2006Pro, not sure what build. The QB file is on the fastest machine. We just got a machine with dual processors which screams. I moved the QB file to that machine with no change in the speed of the open.

I have even found a program that helped me optimize my NetBT TCP/IP registry settings. Still no change. This has been unbelievably frustrating. My husband has also tested the throughput on the network between the two machines and got some very slow speeds, but we have yet to figure out what is causing it. It doesn't appear to be the equipment, so I think it has to be something with the registry settings. Damned if I know what. (pardon the language).

Oh well, I may have to take it to Geeks.
