We have two offices in two states. How can both installations of QB2006 work from the same database in real time?

Sounds like a remote controlled computer (like Logmein.com) or Terminal server is your best bet

He didn't say how big the offices were or how many users at each office. Your solution works fine for one remote person access. If he say has Enterprise and needs half a dozen user access from the remote office, Terminal services is the only way to go. Pay a geek to set it up right.
