2001/2006 same PC?

Is it possible to install separately 2001 and 2006 on the same PC. without "upgrading" 2001?

I like the "reports" feature in 2001 for work, and want to use 2006 for personal transactions.

It keeps upgrading.

Thanks Bob

As your experience shows you, no, you cannot so what you want. It is possible to install the two versions on the same PC, knowing that some functions will be broken, but you cannot prevent the most recent version of Quicken from upgrading the data file once you open it with the new version. You also cannot open an upgraded data file with an older version of Quicken without running the risk of corrupting the data file.

No two versions of Quicken can use the same data..

If you plan to keep two different files; using one in Q2006 and the other in Q2001; you will run into problems. You will not be able to use any planning functions in Q2006 (and there may be some other problems that I haven't discovered or do not remember).

[But, you can install an earlier version of Quicken after you install Q2006. If Intuit continues with its current practice however, the ability to install earlier versions alongside newer versions will gradually die out.]

Question to the group: Would it work if he set up a dual-boot system? I realize it's a hassle, but if he absolutely positively wants to be able to use both, would that be one way to do it? It'd also be costly because he'd have to buy another version of windows to be an OS for the other boot.

Of course, the two versions wouldn't be able to work on the same data file, but I'm not sure if he wanted that anyway.

These would be two different data files. one for 2001 and one for 2006. Neither file would ever be opened with the other version.

Guess I will give it a try and see what functions will not work. My 2001 data file also is on my notebook that I use at work..

Thanks for the reply. Did you install 2006 with 2001 still on the PC? Someone suggested installing 2006 and then 2001.

Thanks Bob

Hi, Dennis.

This is a "side issue", because it is not what the OP was asking about. But, since you brought it up...

I've been dual-booting Windows versions for years. Currently, I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2 and the Beta version of the forthcoming Windows Vista. In fact, I've installed both the 64-bit (x64) and 32-bit (sometimes called x86) versions of both of those. And I've installed Quicken (currently Q2006 Basic) to work with all of them. First, I booted into WinXP x86 and installed Q2006 into E:\QuickenW. Then I created and used my data fileset, QD.QDF. By default, Quicken stores QD.* in E:\QuickenW, with its automatic backups in E:\QuickenW\BACKUP.

Then I rebooted into Vista x86. Using my Quicken CD-ROM, I installed Q2006 again into the same folder, E:\QuickenW. It overwrote the existing program files with the same files from the CD, then made the required entries into Vista's Registry. The first time I ran Quicken from Vista, it updated to the latest revision and had me register again. It asked if I were new to Quicken, then whether I wanted to start a new file or use an existing one. I guided it to my existing QD.QDF file in E:\QuickenW. It loaded that file and I saw all my entries that I had made while running in WinXP. Later I booted into WinXP x64 and went through the same steps, then booted into Vista x64 and did it all again. It took maybe 15 minutes each time.

Now I can run Quicken from whichever OS I happen to be running at the time. It brings up the same QD.* fileset each time. Any entries I make in Vista are there when I reboot into WinXP - and vice versa.

As I said, I've been doing this for several years, through several versions of Quicken and of Windows. It works very well! ;

It's not a suggestion, it is mandatory. Quicken 2006 looks for and uninstalls older versions of Quicken before it installs itself.

I installed 2006 first, then 2001.

Thanks, and that is exactly what I will do.
