Ancient Quicken Deluxe 5 on XP Home Edition

Apologies if this has been answered a thousand times already, but I'm climbing the walls...

I have my original, old Quicken Deluxe 5 program which I ran on my old Win 95 machine. It also ran just fine when I upgraded to Win 98. My computer recently crashed, and was formatted and reloaded with an XP operating system.

I had copied my entire Quicken folder to CD just prior to this. I was also religious about running a backup every time I used the program (mostly for checking and simple bank transactions) and I have those backup (floppy) disks as well.

When I copy my saved Quicken folder from the CD to the computer's hard drive and try to run it, orwhen I try to open it on the CD, I get messages that QCTL3D.DLL and QCONNECT.DLL are not found, and am told to check the path and so forth. Nothing opens or runs.

When I attempt to do a fresh install of the program from my original Quicken Deluxe 5 disk, I am given some message about needing to make an altered CONFIG.SYS file-- a file I simply can't can't find anywhere.

The newest Quicken Deluxe (for 2005) indicates it will read older versions--but only specifically mentions 2003 and 2004.

My question(s): Is there some specific way I can correct this and have my old disk run on the XP OS?

How backwards compatible is Quicken Deluxe 2005? WIll it read data from a program purchased in...man, was it 1996, 1997 or so? I mean, the minute I open the box, I own the thing. I'm not averse to spending the money if I have some assurance that the newer version can salvage my old data, but nobody at Best Buy or Staples could tell me a damn thing, and I can't find any info at the Intuit site. I'd rather not cough up the cash if there's some other way around this.

Any suggestions (other than a flippant "It's time to upgrade! Come into the 21st century" would be appreciated.

TIA-- Jef.

Hi, Jef.

Seems to me you have too choices, one is good, the other is better. ; hard drive and try to run it, orwhen I try to open it on the CD, I get

I think Intuit offers interim version of Quicken to users wishing to upgrade. I have seen that in an article on their Knowledgebase, but cannot lay my hands on it right now. Their installation support folks will have all the details.

I'm not all that familiar with the options a user might have in this area, but I do know that you can "run" some applications in "compatibility" mode ... if they offer it. You can elect to do this by right-clicking the desktop icon for the app, left-click on "Properties", and see if there is a "Compatibility" tab (both my Q2002 and Q2005 icons have this tab). On that tab you can check the compatability mode box, then select the earlier operating system that you want to run compatible with from the drop down list.

Don't know if that is what you were thinking of or not, R.C.

A reminder to the op: if you purchase Q2005 from Intuit ($40 for the "Deluxe" version), you have a 60 money back guarantee ... plenty of time to discover if Q2005 will handle your situation. And you can already find Q2005 at eBay for much less than what Intuit sells it for ... enough less to probably not worry about getting the money back guarantee.

Here is a url to the Intuit trial versions:

I would try to do the install after creating an empty CONFIG.SYS in the root directory of the SystemDrive.

There are posts in this newsgroup from people running Quicken for Windows version 4 on XP. Might search for those; ask posters what they did.

The computer came with Win95, was upgraded to Win98, crashed, and then had XP installed ?

That's probably not enough computer for XP. People with 3.0 chips, 7200 rpm hard drives, and 512 MB of ram are complaining...

I would be interested in what processes are turned off. Restore ? Firewall ? Virus scan ? Automatic Win update ? MS Messenger ? Others I haven't thought off ?
