Backup Question

I am using Q 2010 & W XP. In Q I am managing 2 different files. One is my personal file and the second is for an organization where I am treasurer. I would like to know if there is a way to have 2 seperate Backup screens. That is each Q file would have its own as each Q file has its own set of backup options. What happens now is when I go to do a backup the backup is always for the last set of files I had open. Sometimes this is OK but many times it is not. Because I am somewhat careless I do not always closely look at the backup screen and wind up backing up one file with the others options. It is easy enough to correct if I catch it but I do not always do that. Thanks for any and all help.

In File > Backup and Restore > Backup Quicken file, change the name for the backup file in one of your two different files. You probably also want to check the box to add the date to the backup files.

In Edit > Preferences > Quicken Preferences > Backup you can make some more choices.

I have two different Q files. One is a separate organization and one my personal file. I created two shortcuts, one for each file. When I click on the shortcut Q opens in that file. My backupsare separate and the files are separate.

I used this setup in Money and it worked just as well. What I did was leave my personal files as one Money file. I then created a new file for my organization, under a different name, i.e. 'My Org'. When that was finished I saved that file. I went to the directory where the files were stored and created a shortcut for that file and placed it on my desktop. I then went to the original personal file and made a shortcut of that file and placed it on the desktop. I now have two shorcuts. I click on whichever one I want to work with. The backups are done under the name of the file which I am using. When I switched to Quicken I just converted the two files under their own names. I have Quicken 2010 Home and Business.

I guess you can make a shortcut for your file, and save it under its present name. Then open it again, strip out your personal files and just leave the organization's file and save under a different name. Go to that saved file and make a shortcut and place it on the desktop. You will then have two files and different backups. Make sure you have a good backup in case you screw up. You know about Murphy don't you? :)

ZIP DRIVE -

you might reconsider - since it's mechanical, it will fail -

might migrate your backups over to a simple thumb drive...

Thumb drives can fail also. They have no error detection or correction. They can introduce undetected errors into the data. I would never consider it as a backup. They are designed for easy transport of data, not backup.

I backup to DVD's. I always have multiple copies. I replace the DVD every quarter, and keep the old ones at the bank. I have had to go back to old copies several times, and they have always worked for me.
