Another Backup Question

In the past when I used Quicken to create Backups of say Potter.QDF, the backup files would have numbers appended to my name. i.e I would have backup files with names like Potter1.QDF; Potter2.QDF, etc.

As I am working and looking very carefully today I do not see any appending of the number sequence. I do have my Preference set for retaining 5 copies.

Has something changed in the program, or is this an issue on my machine? If it is my problem, any suggestions on solving it?

These were/are not backup files that YOU created; they are backup files that Quicken created ... all on its own, with no assistance from you (once every seven days or so).

The backup files you create will always have the same name as the file you are backing up ... no additional characters appended to the file name (with one exception: if you have told Quicken you want the date of the backup appended to the name of the backup file).

There are two types of backups in Quicken: the one you initiate and the one that Quicken initiates automatically (and does so whether you want it to, or not).

When you tell Quicken how many backup copies you want to keep, you are telling Quicken how many of its automatic backups you want it to keep.

You can put the backup files you initiate anywhere you want, but the backup files Quicken creates automatically ALWAYS go in the folder named BACKUP in the same folder where the file being backed up resides. So it should be a trivial matter to find Quicken's automatic backups ... but you may need to Search a bit to find the ones you created. [You can use Windows Explorer to search for QDF files or you can have Quicken search for QDF files for you: File > Find Quicken Files.]

My practice is to create backup FOLDERS for Quicken ... folders not within the folder where my Quicken data resides. My Quicken backup folders identify what I need to know about the backup contained therein. In my case, for example, I backup everytime I use Quicken: I have seven Quicken backup folders named for the days of the week. It is a trivial matter for me to choose where to put a given backup, and to find the backup files I previously created.

John thank you very much. I had assumed that when I told Quicken to make a backup, it would enter it into the sequence.

Thank you for your clarification.
