Quicken Backups

I use a backup program which automatically backs up important files daily. I would like to include Quicken data in this backup. My backup program backs up the Q data okay (or so it seems) but when I restore from the back up file, it really did not back up anything. I tested that by doing a regular backup of my Q data onto a peripheral media , then deleted a transaction in Q. Then did a restore from my backup program that backs up daily. It DID NOT restore the transaction that I deleted so I know that backup/restore does not work. Don't misunderstand, Q backup from within Q to a peripheral drive works fine, it's just when I use my daily backup program that it doesn't work.

So then I tried to backup from within Q to a peripheral hard drive (my K: drive). Quicken then prompts "Unable to access the disk in drive K"

I've tried backing up to another peripheral hard drive and even tried backing up to my C: drive, with the same error message. It seems that Quicken will only backup to a peripheral disk, like my Zip drive, A: floppy drive or even a smart drive with a USB connection.

I don't understand why I can not backup daily without opening Quicken. Is that supposed to be that way?

I have no problem in doing a daily backup via Quicken to my 320GB partitioned hard drive. I then copy these (6) backup files to my USB stick memory (STORE'N'GO). Are you backing up all the Quicken data files? I have six Quicken data files (*.QTX, *.QPH, *.QEL, *.QDF, *.IDX, and HCX) with a total of 38,560,745 bytes.

Thanks, Jim

Yes, I am backing up all 4 of my Quicken data files (same as when I backup from within Quicken).

You should be able to backup directly to your USB stick memory.

I have no trouble backing up directly to my USB memory stick. I can backup to any media, but my problem is that I can't backup to a hard drive, whether it's C:, K:, or L:.

Since I can't schedule a daily backup using (NovaBackup), I found a work around. I went to options preferences and chose to backup after every time I open Quicken. I left a zip disk in my Iomega zip drive and backup to it every time I exit Quicken.

Hi Don,

I don't have a problem with doing (if I wanted) a direct Quicken backup to my USB memory stick. I keep the latest 3 backups on my USB memory, while I keep many daily backups on my hard drive. And of course I backup my hard drive data every month onto a DVD and/or external hard drive. You may want to contact Intuit technical support. Have you tried reinstalling Quicken? I find this to fix most of my problems that occur after many months of use.

Thanks, Jim

It is *NOT* "the nature" of any version of Q. I've used Q since it came on one 3 1/2 inch floppy and I've never had any problems backing up (or restoring) data.

This isn't quite clear to me.

Are you saying you had your separate backup program do a "restore" of your Quicken data; or did you have Quicken restore the fileset created by your backup program?

If the latter, did Quicken ask you if you wanted to "overwrite the file currently in use" when you initiated the Quicken restore?

When you do a Quicken restore, you are going to get a file with the same Windows name as the backup file ... restored to the folder where Quicken currently has a file open. If you restore a file with a different name than your current open Quicken file, you will not see the restored *data* unless you tell Quicken to "open" the file you restored.

No, and you're the first I recall mentioning a problem like this.

You don't need Quicken to create the backup, you don't need

*any* special software to create a "backup" of your Quicken data ... you can do it with a Windows "Copy" (you would Copy QDATA.*; where QDATA is the Windows name of your Quicken data).

For that matter, you can do a "restore" by deleting (or renaming, or moving) your current Quicken fileset, then using Windows to "Copy" the backup fileset to your Quicken data folder.

Does it back up daily at a time specified by you?

If you will refer to the original question, that is what I want to do. Yes, I have no trouble backing up and restoring data from within quicken. But I want my backup program to do it. I was using Backup MyPC but it was not compatible with Windows Vista so I had to abandon that program and purchase NovaBackup which is what I am using now. I backup all important data files every evening starting at 10:00 PM. It backs up all my data files ... except Quicken. If I want to backup Quicken, I have to take time out to open the program and manually back it up.
