I am using Quicken Deluxe 2003 and need to know what files I need to backup to by cd-rw in case I need to restore all my quicken data? Thanks, david

Are you talking about restoring the account files or the program itself? If the former, I use the backup process built into Q. Then I burn the files to a CD. If you want to burn them directly, you need a packet writing program (Roxio and Nero have one) that will make the CD look like a big hard/floppy drive.....

If you want to do it manually (or via batch file) , I'd suggest you use the built in backup program to a directory and look at what it backs up. Then proceed accordingly...

Thanks Hank for the quick reply. I have been backing up my CD by the quicken backup, but it has been backing up 5 files. 1) the QDF data File 2) QEL File 3) QSD File 4) QuickTime Extension & 5) QPH File. The first 3 Files always update but number 4&5 always stay the same. This is why I was asking about what files to backup. If I needed Files 4 & 5 in the backup? Thanks again, david

Never thought about it. Files are so small that I felt it wasn't worth spending any time on it.....

Yes you need them all. The qph file is your price history. There is no QuickTime (whatever that is) file, but maybe you are referring to a qtx file which is the output from the tax planner. Always use all the files that Quicken puts in the backup: it knows what you need; no reason for Quicken to backup files you don't need.

Re-sequenced responses to correct top-posting.

What you call "Quick Time Extension" is actually .QTX and contain your tax-related data. The date will only change when you work on tax-related matters. If you don't have that file, then Quicken will rebuild it, but the contents will obviously be lost.

The .QPH contains your price history for securities. Gets updated when/if you download quotes or historical prices. Not having it will cost you all of that information, but will not prevent Quicken from starting up.

If you are so fussed by the storage requirements, know that you can only back up the .QDF. That contains all your transactions. All the other files can/will be rebuilt when Quicken starts up, but all that good stuff will be lost.

Ok, I'll bite. Why would you want to have open each message and scroll all the way to the bottom each time, to read the responses?

I mean, your free to do whatever you like, but I am honestly curious.

If you edit your quotes properly, you don't need to scroll to get to the reply. All the quotation is supposed to do is give a point of reference; not an archive of the entire thread. Bottom posting is generally easier to follow, as it goes in the same order as the conversation.
