Can't unlink brokerage and checking

I have a brokerage account linked to a checking account. I tried to unlink them following help in Q2009 Deluxe, and it doesn't work. Even the options described in help are not the same.

Any ideas on how to do this?

I took a quick look in the Q2009 Help, and couldn't find any specific instructions for unlinking a checking account from an investment account. [I know how to do it, I just don't know what instructions you were following.]

I have linked, and unlinked, checking accounts from investment accounts in every version of Quicken I have owned, including Q2009 RPM, R3, many times ... and never had a problem.

You need to provide more information:

The exact steps you took. The specific investment account type. Any error message you received.

Anything else that might be relevant.

The help screen is as follows:

************************* What if my investment account and my checking account are linked? Can I delete just one? Before you can delete either account, you'll need to unlink them. To do this:

Choose Tools menu > Account List. Select the investment account you would like to unlink and click Edit. On the General Information tab, select 'No' next to 'Show cash in a checking account.'

**************

There is no choice on my screen corresponding to "select No next to Show cash in a checking account." I therefore can go no further.

The investment account is a one security mutual fund type.

Thanks for your interest.

I hope you can help.

There's a missing word there ("Details" - it's missing from the Help), but if you do it as follows, you should get to the right place.

Tools > Account List > (select) the investment account to unlink > Edit Details > General Information (if you're not on the General Information tab by default)

An alternative approach to the same end:

Select the investment account in the Account Bar, then click the Overview tab, then click the Edit Account Details button in the Account Attributes pane, then click the General Information tab (if your not on the General Information tab by default).

Either approach should get you to the same place: the "Account Details" dialog. There (on the General Information tab), you should see the option to: "Show cash in a checking account". You should click the "No" radio button.

The word "select" and the words "next to" are not part of the text that identifies the option to link/unlink a checking account from an investment account. See my previous paragraph.

I tried to send you a copy of the screen that came up with either of the approaches that you suggested, but it seems I don't know how to do that.

In any event there is no "Show cash in a checking account" item and therefore no corresponding radio button.

I find it unfathomable that my screens are so different from yours.

I just created a new linked ordinary brokerage and checking account, and then attempted to unlink them as you described. All of the screens were as you said, and I was able to unlink them.

I then created a new IRA with one mutual fund account, and could not even create a linked checking account. I guess the IRA linked account that I first complained about was created in an earlier version of Quicken where this was possible.

Unless you or anyone else have any other ideas, I will have to find a work-around.

Thanks for your attention.

The only investment accounts that can't have linked checking accounts are

401k's and IRA's. So they don't have the "Yes", "No" radio buttons for linking/unlinking checking accounts.

But I couldn't picture how you could have linked a checking account to one of those account types in the first place, so I didn't assume that was your situation. [It goes without saying that you should double-check that you are looking at the correct investment account.]

Otherwise, as far as I know, it is normal for the Yes/No option for linked checking for investment accounts, to appear where Help says it should appear.

I don't recall ever hearing of anyone having a linked checking account without having the Yes/No option for linking/unlinking. Do you see that option for other investment accounts? Is it there when you create a new investment account?

If that option doesn't appear for your current investment account with the linked checking account, I know of no way to "unlink" the checking account ... except to delete the investment account (which deletes the checking account). You'd have to first create new accounts, then use some combination of copy/paste and QIF export/import to capture the desired transactions, before doing this.

I have the same problem with re-linking a linked checking account with its associated brokerage account. The problem stems from an "improvement" that Intuit made in Quicken 2006. As of that version, and in all later versions, the option to "Show cash in a checking account" was REMOVED for all retirement-type accounts (401k and IRA). However, if you had set up a linked checking account in an earlier version of Quicken, when the option to set up a linked account went away, so did the option to UNLINK.

You are not seeing a different screen -- you are looking at a retirement-type account (without the option) and John Pollard is looking at some other type of account (with the option present).

I have asked Quicken customer service for help with this, and they were of no help in solving this problem. I am hoping in some future version of Quicken, Intuit will either bring back the link/ unlink option for all accounts, or eliminate linked checking accounts altogether and merge all linked accounts as part of the upgrade.

I am having the exact same problem with one of my accounts after importing from Microsoft Money. I have several 403(b) accounts that had linked cash accounts in Microsoft Money. They imported along with the cash accounts and I was able to unlink all of them in the usual way except for one. For that one account, the option to unlink does not appear as the above user reported. I've tried to think of why this might be the case, but I don't see anything special about this account that would prevent the cash account from being unlinked. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Just for posterity, I figured out that the problem in my case was that (at least some) accounts that have been set up for on-line access cannot be unlinked from their cash accounts. Once I disabled the on-line access, I suddenly had the option to unlink the cash account. After unlinking, I was able to successfully re-enable the on-line access again.
