Can two copies coexist?

I have been using Quicken 99 since it was introduced but have now been given Quicken 2009. Will Quicken 99 and 2009 coexist? I would like to 'trial' 2009 before commiting.

If they will coexist how do I 'trick' version 2009 to allow it to load without deleting the older version? Incidentally, I know I could image the drives, load version 2009 and restore if it doesn't 'work out' but that seems like using a sledge hammer to crack a nut :-).

I don't know (and therefore shouldn't be responding), but... how about running one or the other using a sandbox tool (e.g., Sandboxie) or a virtualizer (e.g., VMWare)? Of course, those could be sledgehammer solutions as well. -RL

They can both be installed at the same time; but the full meaning of "co-exist" may be that the devil is in the details.

Intuit has always recommended against having two versions installed simultaneously, and there have always been some relatively minor problems that could arise if you had two versions installed.

With Q2009, a new wrinkle has appeared: when Q2009 is installed, some older versions can lose functionality. For example: I have Q2009 RPM, Q2008 Premier, and Q2007 Premier installed on the same pc: the installation of Q2009 turned both Q2008 and Q2007 into the "Basic" version rather than the "Premier" version. And reinstalling either of the older versions, turns Q2009 into the Basic version instead of the Rental Property Manager version.

I don't think this behavior is the same for all older versions of Quicken, but you may want to be on the lookout for it, and other possible glitches.

I have now installed version 2009 and version 99 seems to work as well. However I have a question. Before I installed ver2009 I added to the Quicken '99' folder and all Quicken files in the Windows directory '_99' just to be sure they weren't corrupted or replaced by the v2009 files. After the installation of v2009 I removed the '_99'.

In the case of the file Quicken.ini (in the Windows directory) v2009 had created a new Quicken.ini file that Quicken 99 seemed to accept. I then replaced the v2009 Quicken.ini file with the Quicken 99 version of the file and v2009 operated without complaint. I guess the question is what is the purpose of Quicken.ini?
