Data file location

Using Q2006 Premier under Vista. How do I change the location of the data files? I don't want them in \desktop\ABC\documents\Quicken\etc. But I don't see anything in Preferences that allows me to change this. ??? Thanks!

If you're talking about a single Quicken data fileset, a simple approach would be: open the old file in Quicken, tell Quicken to "backup" the old file to the new location, have Quicken open the new file (the "backup"), then tell Quicken to delete the old file. Quicken normally remembers the last file it had open, and opens that when you start Quicken.

[Make sure your backup dialog does not have the box checked to append the date to the backup file name when you do the "backup".]

Thanks John. I'm converting Q2004 files opening them (restoring backup) from my preferred location, but Q is then saving the result in \desktop. If I run backup as suggested, that behavior should change?

Possibly another problem - I don't want the backups in the same location as the primary data file, not sure how this affects the above procedure...

I'm not sure I'm following this.

You originally asked about (effectively) "moving" a Quicken file from one location to another. I'm not sure how converting files fits into that scenerio.

But, if you "restore" a Quicken backup, it will be restored into the folder where the currently open Quicken data file resides. If you have opened a data file that is on your desktop (and possibly if you have no file open at all), you may see files "restored" to your desktop.

The procedure I outlined really has nothing to do with "backups" (that's why I kept putting "backup" in quotes).

A Quicken backup is nothing more than an exact duplicate of the file being backed up. The process I described could be described alternatively as: copy the old file to the new location, open the file in the new location, delete the old file.

Thanks John, looks like it's working ok now. For some reason, the first couple times it was not saving files back to the folder where they were opened, everything was being sent to \desktop\...
