Qkn Dlx 05: Data File Location

I'm interested in encrypting my Quicken Dlx 05 data files. In order to do this most efficiently using the software ("Folder-Lock") that I have in mind, the active data files would have to be located in a different directory than their default location.

Is there any particular problem in doing this? Will Quicken have any problem in locating this datya file upon opening? (Of course, I would un-encrypt it befroe starting Quicken.)

Thanks!

I do this and haven't had any problems. I have Quicken use data files under the My Documents directory structure. Further, I have it make its back-up files in still another directory. (All of my back-up files for all applications are under the same folder, each application having its own subdirectory. This makes my monthly back-up to CD much easier.)

You can place your Quicken data files in any subdirectory you wish, and use FILE-->OPEN to get to them subsequently. The last 4 locations are actually stored in the file drop down list (via registry store of .ini file, I forget which) ; Others suggest creating a desktop ICON with a hard link to the data files if you use multiple instances of data files for different family members or organizations.

You do realize Quicken has a rudimentary, although usually more than adequate, method of password protecting data files, don't you? This could make your ambition not needed if you don't know about that password facility. Of course, I would expect your program to have a higher degree of data encryption to it, so it most likely is better. But the Quicken password facility is usually more than adequate.

Y'know, I've been using Quicken for well over 10 years and never noticed the password function until you pointed it out....

That said, I'll probably still go the 3rd-party encryption route, since I have other non-Quicken files/folders to protect.

Thanks!
