I started an account for my 401(k) in Quicken. Since I could only download a certain number of transactions, it's a mess of shares going in and out, placeholders, the totals are incorrect, etc. I want to delete all the transactions and just create entries to start me off, and I'll go forward from there. I would rather not delete the account because it's already "linked" to my paycheck... I'm worried that if I delete it I'll just break something else.

You can start a new account, enter whatever manual entries you wish, modify your paycheck to contribute to the new account, then delete the old account.
[You still may get placeholders when you do your first download.]Alternatively; you may be able to run the Banking > Transactions report, select the account in question, select the transactions you want to delete (as you would select multiple files in Windows Explorer), click the Edit button in the report and select "Delete transaction(s)". [You may not be able to delete the placeholders.]
