file missing

I had a Quicken catastrophe. Just before i was going to install my new 2011 version all my investments unit prices disappeared. The transaction file is correct to the penny but there is NO price history. The reports for each stock holding are also impecable. Where did this data go?

My portfolio view correctly shows the list of holdings along with the number of units for each, but the price and extension seems to have dropped into a hole. Does anyone know if this is recoverable and how to recover this vital data?

I noticed some time ago that the *.HCX file went missing. This is the very small one, but I never saw anything wrong with my data, then, so I thought everything was OK even without this file. I guess I should retrieve it, just for the overall integrity of Quicken. Any ideas how to do this?

The time line of the lost data and and the missing file did not coincide AT ALL!

HELP Please!!!

I suspect that things are not as bad as you think, and I doubt that an .hcx file has anything to do with your problem.

You said you noticed the missing prices as you were going to install Q2011 ... so what Quicken version are you using?

It sounds like you misplaced your Quicken price history file (up until Q2010, Quicken's price history was kept in a separate Windows file ... with the extension ".QPH").

Probably the simplest way to recover would be to revert to your most recent backup. But if the problem is *only* that the price history file is "missing" (and if you are using a Quicken version prior to Q2010), you can just copy your most recent .QPH file into the folder where your Quicken data is stored. Your main Quicken data file is the one with the ".QDF" extension (if there is already a .QPH file in that folder, delete or rename it first - it's most likely empty).

IIRC there used to be a couple tools that could repair or append data into a QPH file.
