What is a "DAT" file

Quicken 2011

I have two sets files with the general format of XYZFXLOG.DAT and XYZFXOLD.DAT where the XYZ is the file name.

With one account both files seem to update with opening/using the account. With the other account only the ...LOG.DAT file changes the fule date.

What are these files?

Do I need to keep these files?

Is there any problem or issue if I delete these files?

The current OFX log file. I think the correct name would be XYZOFXLOG.DAT (it looks like the name you posted is missing the "O" in "OFX").

The old OFX log file. I believe that as time goes on, older data is dropped from the current log file and put in the old log file ... then eventually dropped from the old log file.

They contain the results of downloading using Direct Connect (and, I believe, Express Web Connect) downloads. You can see OFX log file contents in Quicken: Help > Log Files > OFX log.

They can be useful in diagnosing download problems.

Quicken won't complain, but they'll be recreated. I can't think of any good reason to delete them.

Dat is a microsoft file format (many times). Here these are the log files of your last and last but one OFX sessions. I can't read the data with Wordpad, but maybe someone else knows what program can read them. I'd just leave them alone.
