Is there a QB file reader program?

Is there such a thing as a "QuickBooks file reader" program out there somewhere? -- something similar to the free Adobe reader program?

I'm curious because I would like to simply be able to open and look at our QB file, see a balance sheet or P&L statement, etc. without making any entries or changes to the file.

Nope, don't think so. But you could probably setup a user with read only status.

Thanks. I'm the director of a nonprofit organization, but I'm not the person who uses the software and enters information in QuickBooks -- only one person in our organization does that. Since only one person really uses QB, we have one user license.

All I really want to be able to do is be able to read our company file from time to time to either look up some piece of information (a vendor address, an employee start date, etc.) or view and compare financial statements such as balance sheets, P&L, etc. The way I do this now is to just install copies of the QB software on my work computer (our computers are not networked so far) and my home computer and use those copies to look at a copy of the company file I don't enter or change any of the information. Since I am not the same person who regularly uses the QB software, I assume Intuit could say that we should have a second user license for me to look at our company file, but I think that would be silly.

But that started me wondering if there wasn't a QB file viewer program out there.

There is...it's alled QUICKBOOKS.

Nohting will read it, it's a proprietary file format.

Now there are some options for import/export.

Print the file out? Get the full version of Abobe Acrobat and you can "print" the balance sheet and other reports to a acrobat file.

It is liscensed for one user on one computer. You would need a second liscense to use it on a second computer and a second user.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

It is licensed to one user. The number of computers its installed on is unlimited. Page 12 of the 2006 Quick Reference Guide states:

"You can install Quickbooks (single-user version) on the computers used by a single individual. For example, if you bought one copy of Quickbooks for your office, you can install it on your home PC or laptop as well. This does not violate the software license agreement as long as you are the only person using Quickbooks on both computers."

Now I'm not recommending that anyone violate the license agreement however its worth noting that its currently impossible for anyone at Intuit to know if the users of QB are the rightful ones.

I do not find software piracy silly. What is silly is all this negative talk about making copies of movies and music. All I want to do is look at and or listen to it.

Don't copy that floppy.

Not every software liscense allows you to install on a desktop and a laptop.

In this casse it doesn't matter. The situation is one user on one computer, a second user on a second computer.

Sounds like the laptop exclusion would not apply here. Bear in mind with the laptop exclusion it allows one user to use the software on his desktop and his laptop.

Yes they do. You have to register the softwarey to use it.

Maybe be silly but the copyright holder is Intuit, the are within their rights to insist on a liscense for each user.

Just because you feel it is silly does not give you the right to steal the software from Intuit.

And if you have more than one user using it on more than one computer you're stealing the software.

Do the right thing, buy a another liscense/seat.

All of my QB licenses, both Pro & Premier, allow it.

Right. I was just pointing out that QB licenses *do* allow for multiple installations.

Yes, that's what I typed out.

QB or Intuit cannot tell if you are really the same John Doe that registered the license on another computer.

Bear in mind you're not buying the movie/music/software program itself. The copyright holder retains that. What you are buying is a liscense to watch the movie/listen to the music/use the software program. The program remains the property of Intuit.

You do realize that I was being sarcastic about the movies and music. It does not matter if you steal software, music or movies. There is only one hell for those that do.

The program remains the property of Intuit.

As the Minister of Silly, I'm sure you're the expert on this.

True. But Adobe PDF files are also in a proprietary file format, and Adobe provides a free Adobe Reader program to read PDF files. I assume they do that with the idea of making PDF a widely used file format. And, the more widely used and widely accepted the PDF file format is, the more people who will want to or need to buy Adobe file creation software. Of course, PDF read-only files are really just static information, whereas even read-only QB files contain more complex information.

Why pay for the full version of Adobe Acrobat when you can get CutePDF for free?

The full version of Adobe Acrobat does have a tad more features than the CutePDF writer.

True; but, to print QuickBooks reports you don't need the extra features.

Well you don't need mustard on your hot dog but many find it tastes better. By the way I have been a user of the CutePDF products for many years.

While we are confessing, I also have the full version of Acrobat; although, I rarely use it since someone told me about CutePDF.

But not every software liscensee allows it.

But it is one user on his/her own desktop/laptop. You can't install it on your desktop and the desktop of your 40 closest friends.

But they know that your copy of quickbooks (the serial number) has already been registered.

They let you register tha serial number once on a desktop. You may even run into trouble if you have to replace your hard drive.
