quickbooks 2008 file associations

I'm upgrading from Quickbooks 2007 Pro to Quickbooks 2008 Pro. The associations for the .q* files (eg. .qbw) still point to 2007 so when I double-click on a .qbw file, up comes 2007 instead of 2008. What's the correct way to get the desire behaviour? Do I have to change the association myself? Seems like something's wrong with the installation process if I have to do this manually. Thanks.

Because the user can have multiple versions of the program on their machine who's to say what the desired behavior should be. If you hover above the icon for the file long enough windows will display the version lasted used to open the file. Many accountants can have the latest version 2008 but the majority of their clients can still be using an earlier versions.

You did understand that you had to uninstall 2007 before installing 2008 if you wanted the file associations to be as you describe. Otherwise they are correct.

That's an interesting statement. I tried double clicking on a 2007 file and it errored out. I could double click on a 2008 file and it would launch correctly. A check of the file associations in windows explorer shows Quickbooks Laucher as the program to open the file. I would have expected either the last program installed OR the version last used on that file to open up.

Oops--in my last reply I was talking about qbb or qbm files that you have to be in the QB Program to open. When you double click on the qbw it should open in the last version of QB that is was opened in--so if you updated the file & used it in 2008, then it would now open in

2008. ******* That's how it is supposed to work. Can you think of any reason why I get an error message on a 2007 qbw file but the 2008 works as expected?

As for a reason, I can think of several--the first being that something in the '08 file format isn't compatible w/ '07.

I had my QB versions messed up. I forgot that 2008 is only installed on my other computer.

It was 2006 (did not work) & 2007 (worked). And of course, I can't replicate the error this morning. Double clicking on the 2006 file worked as expected with no error message.

Oh--you had the QB gremlins playing with you again! They do that when you least expect it! Glad they're gone now!

**** LOL! I wonder which are worst...QB or Microsoft gremlins.
