Quickbooks pro 2000 and Windows XP

I was attempting to install Quickbooks Pro 2000 to my computer with Windows XP to view some files>

I can get to the point where I enter my installation key code in the installation process, but it won't let me type any of the installation code in the box.

Can anyone tell me how to get QB Pro 2000 to run on this computer?

Check to see if the cord from your keyboard is attached.

That was the first thing I checked. It just continues to lock up at that point in the installation.

IIRC, the older installers have disk size check that can fail on large hard drive partitions. Either try installing to a smaller partition, or use a newer version of QB to view the data.

Yes, but you won't like it.

Install Win 98 on the computer. Install QB 2000. Upgrade the machine to XP.

My guess is the Installer for QB 2000 won't run under XP.

Actually, all versions of QuickBooks 99 and up should work just fine under XP. It's been like 5 years though since XP came out so it's possible that there might be something going on there, system related. Still, before I go there I'd probably try a few things to help better understand why it's not working.

If you were you go to the START button at that point where it's asking you for the keycode and open up notepad would you be able to start typing? If you can, then the next thing I'd try is booting XP into safe mode to see if you can run the installer from there. On boot, start tapping the F8 key and you should get a startup menu - select safemode. Once it boots, go ahead and try and run the installation again.

If that works for you, make sure one of the first things you do after install is to reboot the machine, and then go and download the latest release patch for 2000. I googled for it:

After installing the latest release patch, reboot the machine and hopefully you should be good to go.

If safemode didn't work for you, then I'd start with the standard, run a virus scan, anti spyware scan, etc.

btw, when you say: "That was the first thing I checked. It just continues to lock up at that point in the installation."

...what exactly do you mean by lock up?, does the entire system become unresponsive? or is it that QuickBooks seemingly won't accept input into the keycode field?

For the sake of any others who come later with the same question, I ended up following the suggestion below and it worked. I was able to restore my data to the program and run the needed report. The only glitch was when I tried to back the data up, it gave me a msg that I had to be in administrative status to back up the data to a cd. I have never gotten this msg before. Anybody have any ideas on where this is coming from and why now?

It's coming from QB. QB *MUST* be run only from an account with administrator status. Perhaps that was the problem with your install?

I'm curious if doing a fresh install of Windows XP (bypassing the whole win98 install) would've worked equally as well. Of course my real curiosity was whether a 3rd party application was interfering with the installation in some way. ...glad to hear it's working for you.
