H&B 2009 won't print

Just installed H&B 2009 on my HP laptop running Vista Premium 64 bit. Printer is a networked (through router) HP Offficejet J6480.

When I create a report and try to print, it gives me the normal dialog boxes and I click print. The printer makes some noise, usually spits out a blank page, but never prints the report. If I export the report to a PDF, then print the PDF, it works great.

All other printing works as it always did. Can print just fine from Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer.

Have uninstalled and re-installed printer.

I'm stumped. Any suggestions as to what to do next?

Thanks...

Paul

Thanks John, tried but still the same result.

I saw another posting in this group where John Price quoted you as saying that the solution ( I believe to the printing problem) was to install Quicken to the root directory (C:\ rather than C:\Program files). I remember this being discussed in other posts, but I don't recall that it was in relation to printing. Is that an accurate 'quote"?

Thanks...... Paul

I don't recall saying that (but my memory isn't as good as it used to be); more importantly, I can't think offhand why it would work.

I know that once in a while a user would appear to have something wrong with their installation, and I may have suggested installing to a different folder (and possibly to a folder outside the Program Files folder). But in my mind that was more trying avoid installing to the same place where the problem was occurring, as it was any knowledge of the cause of the underlying problem.

There have been quite a few workarounds for Vista printer problems posted in the Quicken Forums; I don't remember them all.

One is to use a more generic printer driver (may be referred to as an "emulation driver"); there are a couple named somewhere on the HP site (and in the Forums). I think the HP 990c is one.

Another was to use Control Panel to make your printer the default printer and to tell Windows to "print directly to the printer" (ie: do not use spooler).

Also, if you have old printers installed in Windows that you don't use, I would delete them. Some Quicken printer problems have been solved by reducing the total number of printers installed. Or just uninstalling and reinstalling all (needed) printers.

John,

Thanks for the tip about using another driver. I followed the instructions on the Quicken support site to set up the driver for the HP990C as a 'Quicken printer', and it works! This driver doesn't give me all of the same features as the native driver for my HPJ6480 (like automatic two sided printing), but it gives me 90% of what I need. If I really want two sided printing, I can export to PDF first. Then, printing from Adobe uses the J6480 driver which does support two sided printing.

I must say this whole experience has me somewhat puzzled. I often hear it said that the problem is that many HP drivers are not compatible with 64 bit Vista. However, that is most definitely not the case here. My system (64 bit Vista, J6480 driver) most definitely works. Every program that I have other than Quicken prints just fine. Only Quicken doesn't print, which on the face of it suggests it's a Quicken problem, not an HP driver problem. Just trying to figure out whether I should be looking to Intuit, or to HP, to fix the problem.

By the way, this is the posting I used for the procedure to add the HP990C as an additional printer.

The fact that no other software that you use is having a problem printing does not mean that the HP printer driver is not involved. Indeed, HP has already basically admitted to at least part of the problem, and has created (and is creating) new versions of its Vista 64 print drivers. See this link:

Often the problem is not an all-or-nothing problem, where the printer either works for all applications or for none. Not all applications send the same instructions to the printer; some apps may work, while others fail.

Intuit is working with HP on this. It could turn out that there is more than one problem, and it could turn out that both companies are part of the cause.

When new operating systems come out, there is a good chance there will be hardware device driver problems.

John,

Great information. I guess I'll just have to onitor the HP and Intuit sites (and this newsgroup) to see when appropriate update(s) are available.

Thanks again,

Paul
