Hey, John Pollard - $10 DSL?

Hi, John.

Boy, am I sorry I started this thread! :>(

I don't have examples handy, but I've seen fraudulent posts purportedly from MVPs Mat "Jupiter Jones" Kimball and Dave Patrick, and heard about one "from" MVP Sandi Hardmeier - and probably others that I've forgotten. (And Sharon's last name is Fink; she usually posts as SharonF.)

The impersonations usually don't fool anybody who is familiar with the work of the MVP involved. I suppose everybody knows that you can see brief bios of most MVPs at

Don't be sorry. I, for one, learned some VERY valuable lessons as a direct consequence of your original post. I suspect some lurkers have benefitted as well.

Thanks,

Bob

While cable generally tends to be faster than DSL, my experience with Verizon DSL has been pretty bad. I have cable here in NJ but have verizon DSL in MA at my mom's. We keep losing connection or have problems connecting to the internet. Their customer care has been outsourced to India and are clueless. So be very careful when switching providers. Some are good and some are bad. Ask your neighbors before you switch.

I have had Verizon ADSL in NJ for ~ 7yrs now. The last time I calculated it, I have less then .4% downtime and I keep my computers up 24x7.

I have also found the speeds of of Cable to be inconsistent. Like Ethernet, Cable Internet uses a shared trunk. Thus your neighbours can adversely affect you upload/download speeds. This is usually NOT the case with DSL. The Central Office is rarely overloaded and you get a consistent download speed based upon the speed of the servers and pipes between you and the server.

When FiOS (FTTP) comes to my community, I will *jump* at the chance.

As for those stating price per month for a service, it is incmplete information. One *must* state the download/upload rates of the service per month. Otherwise you can NOT make a proper comparision.

Hi Dave,

I thought I recognized your name from the verizon newsgroups. This is in MA and I am not sure of the age of the lines. We are down at least 1-2 times per week for several hours at a time. Maybe its just the area. Our friends who have Comcast in the area report little or no problems with outages.

Yepper. Long time member of the Verizon.* hierarchy. :-)

There are many reasons why some do have problems. Some may be noise introduced into the copper wires and for others corrosion in the old twisted pair.

If I had a problem such as "...down at least 1-2 times per week for several hours at a time." I would raise a stink. That is way below average quality and I would pursue two avenues...

  1. Pro-rata refund
  2. Get the service working correctly.

During the years on Verizon DSL, I had a problem where I had "drop outs" of connectivity. Using a utility and performing pings, I actually graphed the short duration outages. Verizon replace a faulty Router and all worked well again.
