how to purge my Plan?

I have been trying to get my plan to work and I'm starting to suspect it is corrupt. It may be a conversion error from a previous version of Quicken when I started a plan but never finished it. Anyone know how to start over like you can with a budget? Or is there a file that I can wipe out to start with a clean slate?

Loading thread data ...

I just created a new Quicken data file and started entering some of the same data by hand. I could very quickly tell the program was behaving much differently. Something is obviously corrupt and I believe it is a programming error. If I were to guess, the conversion from a previous version of Quicken didn't handle the plan properly.

For example. If I create a new 401k account it asks questions about the company's match and what the purpose is "your retirement", "general expenses", etc. It doesn't allow me to enter the company's match and there's only one purpose available and that's "general expenses". I found other examples very similar to this as well. Where things seem to not behave the same as the clean data file. I'm guessing there is other hidden data or the accounts came along for the ride in a somewhat incomplete or inconsistent fashion to the new version.

Anyone have any suggestions to help me out? The only thought I have is to export every account I have, create a new Quicken data file, and import everything into the new data file. This seems extremely risky, but is there another option?

Hi, Scott.

First obvious question: Which version of Quicken?

Second obvious question: What are you trying to do?

Lots of other questions: What kind of data? Why do you need a new file? Conversion from which previous version of Quicken? To which version? And on and on.

I feel like we came into the middle of the movie and have no idea what happened up to now. :>(

I've not worked with retirement plans in decades, and never in Quicken, so I probably can't help at all with your problem, But you'll have a better chance of getting help from others if you "bring us up to speed" in your initial post.

Doh... I'm usually really good about posting that.

Establish my Retirement Plan using the planning features.

What kind of data? Whatever it is that the Retirement Planner needs. I feel I need a new Quicken data file because when I create a new one, and do the very same things, I get drastically different results in Quicken. Since

2000 I have been upgrading to the latest version of Quicken each year it comes out. So this is a conversion from Q05 to Q06. However, I started but never completed my Retirement Plan in the 05 version.

I understand. But do understand, I asked a simple question and got a question in return. I asked if it was possible to purge a plan, and start all over. From what I've found, this is not possible. That being said, it's time to start digging into the problem with all of your questions. :)

I did ask a simple question. I didn't think I needed much more help than where the hidden button was to delete an existing plan.

Some specific examples. When I tell the plan to exclude an income account, the plan does BETTER. When I save for the future instead of spending it all, my plan completely fails in about three years. When I go to my investment accounts I can only select "General Expenses" and cannot select "Retirement" because it isn't there. When I try to update a 401k account it doesn't have nearly the same UI as it does when I create a new 401k account in a new Q data file. For one, it has no way to state that I get matching funds from my employer. Other issues is taht when I enter everything perfectly. I mean I spend many many hours making sure everything is right.. my plan fails miserably in just a couple of years and I know that's not the case. Somewhere, it seems that there is hidden data taht I can't get to because it was transfered from a previous version of Q and now this version of Q doesn't have the user interface to allow me to interact with that hidden data. I'm guessing there are duplicate accounts causing me troubles or something. What I find really interesting is in a previous version of Q I remember creating the Retirement Plan and giving it a name. This version of Q shows the name, but has no way to allow me to change the name, create a new plan, or delete this plan.

Does that help a bit more? I think Intuit really fudged up and didn't do any regression testing at all.
