Quicken has many reports which can show progress over a period (such as account balances or itemized category spending, over the course of months).
Is it possible to show your portfolio value over a period of time, such as the portfolio value on the last day of each month over the course of time, in a single report?
Sure; you already named one of the reports that can do that: the Account Balances report. Also the Net Worth report. Both have an option on the Display tab of the Customize dialog to Show "Account detail", which will list each security held in each account. Both allow you to select an "interval" that can be "Month". If you exclude the non-investment accounts, you've got a report of your "portfolio".
You can also get something similar - but with the addition of cost basis - using the Portfolio Value & Cost Basis report. Unlike the other two reports, it can show your values per security (regardless of account), and more, if you choose.
All three reports have bar graphs, and the one for the Portfolio Value & Cost Basis report is quite nice, with the bars broken down by security, or whatever you subtotal by.
