List of 'What's New in Q 2013 Deluxe'

From the "What's new" list in my brand new copy of Q 2013 Deluxe - to those curmudgeons who don't do their fair share and keep Q viable by purchasing each year, perhaps this will wet your appetite - after all, if you don't care about Q, why are you bothering to read this post and NG to start with?

"Here's a list of improvements and changes we've made to Quicken this year. If you're upgrading from an older version of Quicken, also take a look at the improvements we've made to Quicken over the years.

Mobile & Alerts NEW. Quicken on your mobile device (iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet) makes keeping track of your money super easy. Whether you?re at home or on-the-go, you?ll know where you're spending your money, how much you have left, and how it all compares to your budget. You can also choose to receive various alerts and account summaries regarding your balances, fees, and spending patterns. All of which are completely customizable, of course!

Budgets IMPROVED. It?s easier than ever to set goals and stay in control of your finances with our improved budget tool. Check out the new Grid and Annual Views, and set up budget rollovers to handle month-to-month variations in your income or expenses. We think you'll love what we've done here.

Loans IMPROVED. Quicken now downloads loan information from financial institutions. This makes tracking your loan balances easy, and the new loan account interface offers a more complete picture of your loan, including the projected payoff date and the total interest paid.

Hidden and Closed Accounts IMPROVED. Quicken now provides more flexibility in the way you view and use your hidden accounts. For example, if you?ve closed a few of your real-world accounts, you can now mark those account as ?Closed? in Quicken.

Register Search and Filter NEW. We?ve added a fast new search feature that finds transactions in the currently open register and then displays them in the context of the register itself?like a register filter. Give it a try!

Register Action Bar NEW. The Register Action Bar is a row of buttons at the top of your register that you can customize to provide fast access to the features and reports you use most often in an account.

Renaming Rules IMPROVED. We've simplified the user interface and improved the matching accuracy of renaming rules.

Savings Goals IMPROVED. It's now much easier to access and use your savings goals."

This is marketing speak, Andrew. What it really means is totally unclear. New and improved - haha. I'd have to buy it to experience whether or not I can download data for my Chase Heloc or not. Or my Kohls CC.

I'd probably buy a copy just to find out about all those "new and improved" things, but I'd have to have some better incentive than the currently available discounts. Waiting for the TT combo offer ...

Exactly! That's why I asked here; I was interested in hearing the views of people here on what's new or improved in this version rather than reading what Intuit wrote.

customizable, of course!

Would be interested in seeing if I can get this going in the UK - will need to buy from US store but there are ways around that (legal - am talking things like gift cards etc.).

That's quite interesting to me too - monthly budgets for me vary quite widely, and reasonably predictably.

Doesn't change the world, but still a nice to have as I have a lot of closed accounts (as you'd expect for a now 14 year old account file).

Yes please - current Find capabilities all feel a bit old.

As with the others, not sure of the specifics here but interested to find out.

I may well get this one since, due to the last migration hell after I'd left it the best part of a decade to migrate, I'm also a bit paranoid about the ease of moving data files between very old versions to the new one. Not totally sure yet, but may do.

Have also been looking at a few Mac native ones - they're getting better, but not there yet for me I don't think. I need to do a bit more reading about what's on offer, but I may well be hitting eBay up for one of these.

Cheers, Ian

Because I just can't get enough of your incredibly beautiful prose? ;-) I really don't give a rat's rear end about Q, it works, I use it and I'm CONSTANTLY trying other alternatives to find one that will work for me w/o all of Q's quirks and problems.

This is scary, I'd NEVER allow any financial information on one of my mobile devices, they're too often lost or stolen but I bet identity thieves will really love this feature!

My savings goal remains the same, to wait until Costco offers the Quicken and TurboTax bundle and hope it's a really good price!

For the record, my comment about 'curmudgeons' was just to rattle some chains! To each their own of course.

I haven't looked at this list in detail EXCEPT that the " Register Search and Filter" in checkbook register. I have hundred, if not thousands, of transactions going back 10 years. The search was instantly fast. You type in a search string in the balloon window and it filters out all the other entries except the ones containing your string unbelievably quickly. You're left with a register panel that just has those entries in. Of course, the usual search across all of quicken balloon is still at the top right of the page as well.

This is a nifty feature.

Hi, Andrew.

I haven't yet seen 2013 "in person", but that sounds to me like what 2012 - and many prior versions - have always done with the Find or Find All command. What's different in 2013?

A curmudgeon am I? I've reviewed the above list and, to put it bluntly, Andrew, there is sweet, frig all there for me. All bling.

In the former search facility (still exists), you type a string and hit enter, and Q gives you back a popup box with the returned items spread across multiple accounts in the window. You have to manually then click in a checkbox to bring up the exact transactions you wish to see.

The new one works within a single register. As you type each letter, the register becomes one that one contains the individual entries...and the more letters you type, the fewer entries are shown in the register. Ultimately, only the entries are shown that match the entire string you enter. And there's no need to hit 'enter' or select an individual one to see at the end of the process.

I like this. I often remember a transaction vaguely, then have to find the details of it in whatever account I used. Having the search cover all accounts is good for me.

I'm sure I would learn to work with this search system. I was able to use the previous iterations of the search, which had changed several times over the years.

Han - just to be clear, Q 2013 does *not* replace the old search option, it adds the new one within the register, keeping now TWO search areas to enter, one for the former ('outside' the register demarkation) and the

*adds* other (the new one) ('inside').

Thanks, Andrew, I sort of figured that, but it is good to know for certain.

I'm sorry - I didn't know you had the new Q already. From your original post, I thought you misunderstood something I did not state clearly.

Now it's my mistake. I do NOT yet have Q13, but will likely get it eventually. I'm retired, but my brain isn't yet ossified enough that I can't learn a new trick or two every once in a while ...

Have they done anything to improve the dreadful finder window where you have to specify what type of quantity are seeking first. And if you enter the target name and then pick your category, the target name is wiped out. Has that feature ever been beta tested?

Sure, Andrew, I CARE about Quicken. Hell, I've been using it since

1993!!! But I am NOT a shareholder and will only upgrade when I absolutely HAVE to, I.e. every 3 years to maintain the ability to download share prices.
