Missing sound

After all these years did Intuit finally drop the entry music for Q2010? Mine is silent as it loads.

Hi, Gary.

Ever since Windows 2000, we've been having this problem with each new edition of Quicken. I don't yet have Q2010, so maybe it's different this year. I expect to get Q2010 in the next few days.

In the meantime, you can search the archives here for one of the MANY times that I've posted my QSounds.reg file (sometimes with the extension changed to .txt so that it won't accidentally get merged into the Registry prematurely). This simple text file puts the Quicken settings into the Registry at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\Quicken

EUREKA! I have found it! ; were no longer working.

I have to go out now, but I'll have another look at this in a day or two.

The registry entry the message says to export and copy contains no values. Exporting it didn't do anything. When I tried the cut and paste method, deleting the leading >>, on double clicking the file I got the message that it was not a reg file and only binary files were accepted.

Were you logged in as the user who DOES have sound?

Notepad's Replace command (on the Edit menu) should make it easy to find all occurrences of "E:\QuickenW" and replace them with "C:\Program Files".

After editing the original file to fit MY system, I saved it as a plain text file with the .reg extension. Then I simply clicked on that file in Windows Explorer to execute the default action for a .reg file, which is "Merge". This click merged my. reg file into my Registry. (Note that this action is immediate and can't be undone - but we can re-edit the file and Merge a corrected version in most cases.)

Let us know how this works out for you, Gary.

I have sounds in H&B 2008. I have turned them off because they are too annoying.

Did everything you said and checked the registry values. They are all as you gave but still have no sound on open although the wav file is right where the registry points. Will reboot the machine and see if that helps.

I've been turning off my Quicken sounds for years. That "ca-ching" when hitting Enter *especially* drove me nuts.

I'm glad that users who like the sounds can get 'em back, though. :-)

Margaret

Did you remember to enable sounds in the program? It's under Startup in the Program preferences.

I guess I have been lucky...I have never NOT had the option of sounds but I have only been using it since version 2004.

I'm not trying to talk you into turning the sounds back on, but I did want to point out that you can keep sounds on and easily turn any particular sound off. Or if you don't mind having a sound when hitting enter, but just don't like the particular sound, you can replace it with a different sound you prefer.

What do you see when you go into Control Panel>>Sounds? Mine show all of the quicken sounds that are available. I see 7 sounds enabled in windows including qopen.wav for open program.

I believe I read there might be a glitch with the Q2010 opening sound, and ... something like Vista, or Win 7. Forgot the details, but I think the last I read, an Intuit developer was going to look into it.

I do have the 'ca-ching' on XP when entering transactions, but no sound on Q

2010 startup when the splash screen occurs. But there is a thread going on in the Quicken community forum dealing with this issue that others also have reported - all the local settings are correct in these cases; Q 2010 might have a start up bug.

Hi, Gary.

Well, I bought Q2010 Deluxe yesterday and installed it this morning. Like you, Andrew and others, I have the other Quicken sounds, but no sound on opening the program itself.

I didn't even have to use my QSounds.reg file this time. I'm running Win7 x64 as an Administrator and it did prompt for credentials before running Quicken's Setup (DemoShield). I upgraded from Q2009, so maybe it picked up my Sounds settings from there, but Win7's Control Panel | Sound | Sounds has the Quicken entries, with no special action on my part. Also, the Registry includes the proper settings in the HKCU\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\Quicken key.

As you said, the qopen.wav sound plays fine from the Control Panel's Test button, but not when Quicken starts. This glitch in the program is curious, but far from fatal. If we don't find anything worse than this, I'll be very happy! ; The open program has the right file listed and a speaker next to it

So, RC, leaving aside any issues with sounds, what do you think of it? What changes do you see? Like them? Dislike them?

Your comments would be appreciated.
