New bank security password requirements.

My bank has instituted a new PW policy, Step one, sign in. Step 2, identify a picture and phrase, Step 3 enter password. I understanhd these requirements were mandaded by the govt. Anyhow I am back to downloading by web connect at the banks site. Anyone else going through this. I am using Q07, B&P.

In a way. I have QD05 and, back in June, my bank changed their financial software on the network. This resulted in Quicken downloads no longer being possible(according to the bank) but, I can still do it.

FWIW, Vanguard has two step loggin with a picture and still supports direct download. And the Chase website indicates it will "recognize" your computer and apply extra security only if you try to access from another computer. I have no idea what that means - particularly if you have a laptop.

have not seen it related to Quicken downloads, but one of my mutual fund companies - don't recall which one - Fidelity, T.Rowe, Vanguard has instituted a "picture" that you pick, so that you will recognize it as a "valid website" to thwart phishing...

Google on "two factor authentication" and you see a huge number of pro and con pages on why this is happening.

That said - my bank simply requires a username, password and added a PIN entry requirement for web access. They have no plans to disable DirectConnect.

I have this with my IngDirect account. But they never supported direct connect anyway. One of my 401k accounts (Principal) makes me download an OFX file. All my other institutions (E*Trade, Wachovia, Chase, Citicorp, First Fidelity) still play nice with Quicken.

Vanguard changed to this model earlier in the year. For a short time (week or so)I could not access my accounts (two) but Vanguard fixed the problem. When I initially called about the problem I was told they were updating there software to restore the Quicken connection.

HSBC bank is dropping DirectConnect and requiring this multi-step WebConnect crap. They claim it's the result of a goverment requirement too.

I don't understand it though. My bank (Chase) isn't making the change nor is my fidelity account. (At least I hope not)

The bank sites I use have a 'remember me on this computer' option.

I've heard this. I have discussed this with the manager of my local branch and assured her that when they take this away from current customers, I will become and ex-customer. She said she's heard this before and at least a dozen potential customers chose not to open new accounts because of this. She complained up the food chain but was ignored.

Wachovia does NOT "play nice with Quicken" any longer for new customers. Well, it does for downloading transactions, but for direct pay you must use their bill pay web connect system.

The IT people at Wachovia told me that they were doing away with bill pay within Quicken because of troubleshooting issues. What a line of nonsense. I suspect they use the Web bill pay system becuase they are providing this service to other banks or are they subbing it out another vendor to provide it for them. Their system has a remarkaly similar interface as Select Bank's (NJ).

Others have said here it is the fees that are paid to Intuit. Who knows? My comment is that if one customer can use Quicken to do everything all customers should be able to too. The comments I've gotten from my local branch is that they know nothing about on line activity. The last person I talked to wanted me to take out a CD. I told her I would when they allowed me to do all of my banking with Quicken.

Still do so with no issues. The only difference is that if I'm logged into Wachovia's site, I can see which billpay transactions have been paid or are pending. Do NOT have to enter payments on their site though .. only do so through Quicken (as always). If they've changed it, it's apparently not for everyone.
