New Investment Account Setup Confusion

I've been using Q2014 Premier with several bank, loan and investment accoun ts for a number of years. I just tried to add another account with TD Ameri trade to the mix, but things aren't going so well.

  1. I clicked on "tools/add account/brokerage"
  2. I selected "TD Ameritrade" from the listed offerings
  3. I filled- "Your Quicken Login is your website UserID/Account and Password or your 9 digit account number/PIN"

Could Intuit be any more obtuse? Exactly what the hell are they looking for with such great "help?" Are the Chinese now writing Quicken advisory messa ges?

  1. I enter various forms of information in the two boxes, including my TDA user account number for the account I'm adding to Quicken, the user name fo r the TDA account, the nine-digit TDA account number and the password for t he TDA web interface. If my TDA website username is "DaddyWarbucks" and my TDA password is "MellonHeadChittlen," my take on the Chinese login info abo ve is that I should enter "DaddyWarBucks" in the top box and "MellonHeadChi ttlen" in the bottom one where the Chinese help window pops up. I've tried other variations of the same process as well.

  1. Every time I click on the "connect" button Quicken tells me, "Looking fo r Accounts," the little green thingy twirls around in a circle, and after a few seconds we go to a new window that tells me, "You need login informati on from TD Ameritrade in order to have automatic downloads in Quicken."

I've been logging on to the new TDA account for months, but I waited until I retired in order to add it to Quicken, since I figured it would be a full time job, and I was right! I already have another different TDA account in Quicken with direct download working (and YES it has a different name and TDA account number).

Can someone decipher the "help" message?

Frustration understandable.

I don't have a TDA account, but opened a test Q file & began an account add session where I acted like I did have a TDA account. When I made the fiel ds you mentioned focus (meaning I clicked in them), I too, got the same cal louts (messages) that you saw. I'm using Q2013 H&B, but the messages were the same.

What I'm about to ask may sound strange, but have you called TDA?

I know you've already got one TDA account downloading, but some FIs have di fferent configurations for Q logins that you won't find at all intuitive & TDA may be able to give you some additional information.

I've got one FI that requires me to prefix my account number with a Fund# f ollowed by a comma. I've got another one for which I had to get on the pho ne with Customer Service. There is no way I could have arrived at the corr ect configurations outside of a call to their respective CS depts.

If the account that's already downloading is of a different type than the n ew one (brokerage vs. 401k?), TDA may have different policies on how to log in.

Even if they don't have different login configs, TDA should be able to prov ide you with support & get your downloads working.

P.S. Based on what I saw, I believe your interpretation of those fields is accurate. It's just asking for the TDA UserID & pw.

Well Bart, it looks like we were both full of beans. You were on to somethi ng though when you suggested calling TDA. Here's the info from the TDA webs ite help file entitled, "How do I download my account information into Quic ken®?"

You will need your 9-digit account number and 4-digit personal identificati on number (PIN) to start the download. The UserID and password you use to access your online TD Ameritrade account are different from the 9-digit account number and 4-digit PIN. To find your account number and PIN, go to Client Services > My Profile > P ersonal Information. To change your PIN, click the Edit button next to PIN in the Account Securi ty section and follow the prompts.

For help, please call us at 1-800-669-3900. We're available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, market holidays excluded.

To download to an existing Quicken account:

Open Quicken, hold the Control key down and press A. Click the Edit button for the TD Ameritrade account. Click the Online Services tab at the top. Click the Remove from One Step Update button, then Yes, and OK. Click the Activate One Step Update button in the Online Services sectio n and enter your 9-digit account number and 4-digit PIN to start the downlo ad.

Note: If you submit the UserID and password you use to access your online T D Ameritrade account, you may receive incomplete and wrong information in Q uicken.

To create a new Quicken account:

Hold the Control key down and press A. Click the Add an Account button at the lower right. Select Brokerage under Investing and click Next at the bottom right. Click TD Ameritrade and enter your 9-digit account number and 4-digit P IN to start the download.

They don't want the username and p/w that you use to connect via their webs ite. In fact they caution you that using those may cause incomplete or wron g information!

Since I had not set up a PIN number I had to go through their security syst em to get a code emailed to me, and then enter that number on their website in order to get to the page to create the PIN.

After that I entered the 9-digit account number in the field that looked li ke the entry for a username, and I entered the newly setup PIN in the field that looked like it was the entry for a password. I clicked the "connect" button in the lower right-hand corner and we were off to the races.
