Quicken + Ameritrade confusion

I'm a mostly happy user of Quicken 2005. I'm considering upgrading to

2007. Before I upgrade, I'd like to know if there is any hope of Quicken handling my Ameritrade brokerage account correctly.

I've pretty much given up tracking securities in Quicken, at least for my Ameritrade account. Quicken consistently finds ways to screw it up to the tune of 15% or more. Automatic download starts off with the wrong balances right off the bat. I have even deleted the account, set it up entirely by hand, and then watched as the very first online update messes up the balance. Surely I am not the only frustrated user. Any pointers?

Thanks. CM

There is an assumption that Quicken is the problem. It might be on the Ameritrade side. I no longer transact busness with Ameritrade (I did not like statement presentation - my choice), but experience with E-Trade was the same. Somewhere later (after several calls - and several months) my balances do tie. In my case I deposited stock certificates which was not reflected in one deposit, but yet in another it was fine.

Have you called Ameritrade's Support Desk and have you gotten through to someone beyond first level support? The more detail you can provide them on why it is off by 15% the better they can help you.

I really don't think in upgrade to 2007 will resolve your problem. I would still tackle this within your version.

Tony,

I'm also pretty unimpressed with Ameritrade statements. They are far more complex than necessary. But they do make sense after a while and I have to believe that many people have figured out how to use them with Quicken. I'll try the other side of the equation as you suggest.

Thanks, CM

I'm not an Ameritrade user, so I can't give you any firsthand advice; and when you limit your explanation to "Quicken consistently finds ways to screw it up", or "messes up the balance", you make it difficult to provide secondhand advice.

In my experience, the vast majority of problems related to downloads are caused by the financial institution, and exacerbated by the user not understanding what they see and what they should expect to see.

Without any details, I can't tell you much more. You might want to try looking in the Quicken forums hosted by Intuit; there are some posts there about Ameritrade. I'm never sure which Intuit url's can be successfully used as a link, but if you go to the Intuit Support site, there is a link to the forums.
